what version of media encoder?

I need to produce small training clips for salesman that don't know how to download codecs.:scared: That leaves me with wmvs or mpegs.

If I make wmvs, what version of microsoft media encoder should i use? These have to run on laptops with midrange performance. I guess that rules out ver 9.

Should I produce mpegs instead? The file sizes can't be that big.

What software should I use for production? I typically use Ulead, Premiere, and Vdub.

IMO, your best bet would be mpg. mpg is the most universally supported format in existence. It will play virtually on any platform and/or player and is perfectly streamable.

Otherwise, for reduced filesize, wmv7 (combined with wma 9 - audio is backwards compatible) is your best bet to ensure it will play. But I'm not sure as to how much support outside of the windows platform this receives.

Try and see which one of both gets closest to the results you desire.

The latest media encoder supports wm7.

What PerCIVaL is exactly right, but I just wanted to add that WM7 & 8 are of equal compatibility and can be played on Macs and Linux. But for overall universal encoding go with MPEG-1 however you wont get good super low bitrates from it.
