Filter question (Temporal smoother vs Smart smoother HQ)

Hi folks!

I have question. I really don't know, if it is necessary to use those filters... if using them, does it really have an influence on final quality ??? I'm often using Virtual Dub's temporal smoother, but some people have suggested me to use Smart smoother HQ. My question is:
What is the difference between them ? Which one is better ?
I've read, that SmartSmootherHQ is usefull for anime encoding, but how about high motion action movies ? What are the best settings for them ?

my another question is ... Why is NTSC source more compressible as PAL source ? (an example: I did an 1st pass on same movie, first was NTSC, second was PAL. After that, I've loaded both files to GKnot for compressibility check, and guess what... I've got arround 60% copressibility on NTSC and just arround 35-40% for PAL source) Isn't it little bit strange ?

SShiQ is a spatial smoother, it filters the imperfections in the blocks of an avi. Using a TemporalSmoother will average the pixel changes based on adjacent frames. It can be good or bad to use a temporal smoother. It depends on taste on whether you want to retain a mpeg2 like look or a smoothed and soft look. Spatial smoothers merely smooth similar pixels on the same frame.

SShiQ is better than temporalsmoothing for compression purposes but is _way_slower_ than tempsmoothing.

Since you are talking about real action movies (not anime) i personally opt for a low strength SShiQ and keep the slight blockiness, looks better in real action movies than anime imo.


oops forgot your pal/ntsc question... ???? ummm i am not sure about that question, must be two different sources, one of which is compressably superior than the other
doubt the fact that one is pal and the other is ntsc would make any difference
