Hi everybody:
I have similar problem like fantasymick in his thread. I try to encode "Showgirls" movie (Region 1). When I preview this movie in DVD2AVI, I will get this information:
Aspect Ratio: 4:3
Frame Rate: 29.970
Video Type: FILM 99%
Frame Type: Progressive/Interlaced (Rapid Changing)
The movie was Telecined, there are 2 interlaced frames out of 5 (3 are progressive).
I tried FORCE FILM for the first time. The movie looks great, but there are 3 places in the movie with visible Interlace effect.
For the second time, I encoded the movie also with FieldDeinterlace option on. Interlace efects has gone, but the movie doesn't look as good as for the first time. I think that FieldDeinterlace method was used on the whole movie, also in places where it is not needed. This is why the movie doesn't look as good as for the first time.
Could somebody tell me, if there exists some method of de-interlacing (or something else to take away this interlace effect at these 3 places in movie) only places with visible interlace effects?
Thank you.

Start with this tutorial (www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm), and also review this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46499). The latter gives additional options for you if standard IVTC methods are insufficient, and also, it includes a magnificent description from Neuron2 about MPEG-2 flags, how they might appear, and how to look at them in the .d2v project with a text editor.
It's my guess that you have Telecined content with non-standard flags, and merely need to set Field Options to None and select IVTC in Gknot.
I hope this helped!

Thank you very much. I know IVTC Tutorial by heart, I have read it a lot of times. The link to thread and also other links in that tread are very helpfull. I need to experiment and try encoding with different settings. I encoded about 20 movies, but all of them were progressive, FILM 99%, so there was not problem to encode them. But now, I have a lot of DVDS that is not so easy to encode so I read everything that could help.
Thank you once more.

This sounds just like a movie i'm trying to encode, Return to Oz which i posted about here. (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=46499)
If Showgirls is anything like it you're going to have bad luck with Force Film as well as Telecide().Decimate(5) but by all means try. I've tried Telecide with guide=1, agg=true and a few other parameters all yielding awful results. It's funny because no matter which method of IVTC i try whether it be Telecide/Decimate or IVTC2.2, certain known problem spots will be fixed using different parameters but then others problems will pop up that weren't in previous encodings.
Previewing in VirtualDub doesn't give me that great of an idea of how the encoding is going to turn out so I've been encoding multiple versions a night, for days of the same flick using IVTC2.2 with different settings, since so far it has given me the closest to what i want but is still a long way off.
This leads me to ask, how do you pros deal with problematic movies without having to spend weeks hunting for the perfect parameters to use with whichever IVTC? I don't think encoding clips will help me since the movie is just too erratic for IVTC to find some kind of uniform pattern, therefore I'll end up with perfect clips but when i go to encode the whole movie there will undoubtedly be problems later on leaving me back at square one. I'd like to find a way to do this without tieing up my computer for days at a time finally ending this obsessive madness.
If Showgirls is anything like Return to Oz which shows the same pattern you describe I recommend trying IVTC2.2 with different settings. Or better yet, pick a different movie. Why encode Showgirls? :p

I tried to encode movie with Telecide(guide=1).Decimate(5) and also with IVTC(70,10,25). I don't know if the whole movie is OK, but the problems that I had before were fixed. But I've got another problem. Gordian Knot has changed the bitrate of encoding before starting the second pass. I wanted to fit the movie to 2 CDs, but the file has now 300 MB more. Could someone tell me how to achieve the final filesize (or bitrate) that I want and make Gordian Knot not to change bitrate by encoding ?

I'd say that you forgot to check the box marked 'IVTC in script' on the DivX video encoding tab.
