Xvid encode hugely undersized

I want to make a 2-pass Xvid encode of a 1hr 40min B&W movie. I setup the first pass, goes fine. Afterwards the 2nd pass shows that the final encode will be 160megs or so.

I am using:

Virtual Dub 1.5.1
Avisynth 2.05
- LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth2\Yea\MPEG2DEC.dll")
- LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth2\Yea\decomblegacy.dll")
- mpeg2source("00.d2v")

XviD-04102002-1 _ALPHA_ Release

Maybe b.c of my Avisynth script? Any ideas or help would be great.

upgrade your xvid binary. under/oversize problems are attributed to older builds of xvid and were heavily discussed. newer builds from Koepi, Nic, and Umaniac all have the bug fixed.

So the undersize comes about only on certain movies? B.c I've done other movies just fine. Seems to be just this B&W one. I'll upgrade now.

As far as I can see, the build you are using is Koepi's 04102002-1 binary, which is a quite stable "stable" one ;) and it has never caused an undersize/oversize problem for me so far. There must be something else going wrong there.

edit 1 - Also, undersize might be due to saturation of the codec, but 160 mb really seems too low for the specified resolution and the resize filter you use (if you have completed the second pass and it came out undersized).

edit 2 - What's your first pass size? And have you finished the second pass of your encode or cut it halfway through?

1st pass was like 8megs.

2nd pass was stopped a quarter of the way. I viewed the movie and it was a mess of blocks. I updated and will try again tomorrow.

Please try Koepi's StatsViewer, and load your 1-st pass .stats file
into that program and see the 1st-pass size.

I'm afraid that your movie is well compressed by XviD :)

I think he try to say that his 1st-pass .stats file size is 8MB,
not the 1st-pass size actually :)

Yes, that I was. I never had to use StatsReader before. I tried it after the 1st time it wasn't working. After reading as to what to do with StatsReader, it still did not help.

I'll let it run overnight tonight.
