Problems with just 1 DVD

I am trying to compress steven kings - the stand (6 hours long). I am having quite a few problems getting it perfect though.

For example, the intro has a long panning scene which skips a lot, i tried playing with the divx pro settings but nothing seems to fix the skipping.

Its also a little hard to get the right settings since its 23.97fps none film (gets detected as 29fps) and while previewing the frame type flicks between progressive and interlaced constantly.

im not trying to get the file size low, tried using 2000+ bitrates.

Just wondering if there is any advice.

Thats a really long movie. Have you done an IVTC on the movie to reduce the framerate back to 23.97 fps?

Also are you doing a 1pass or 2 pass encode? If you don't care about filesize and want a perfect movie, you need to do a 1 pass encoding and set the Max Quantisizer to 2.

All NTSC DVDs are shown as 29.97fps in DVD2AVI, film or not. I suspect that you should take Hiro2k's advice and perform IVTC, since evidently it was shot in 16mm. But to be sure, you should probably take a closer look at the frames. Read this (http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm) for more information.

I didn't understand that at all. But if you tried to Force Film in DVD2AVI, then that's almost certainly your problem. If you use No Field Operation, and then IVTC, you should be OK.

I didn't know about IVTC sorting the progressive/interlacing as well as the frame rate, i guess this is sorted now. I tried 1 pass/2 pass and the n pass option but they all turn out similar. Most of the content is fine, i just get a lot of problems with the panning parts. There are also some problems when one scene fades to another.

Ive been using no field operation since film only goes as high as 85%.

Ill work through the tutorial given and then report back.

EDIT: I found part of the problem, the areas where the skipping occurs is where the frame type stops flickering and just stays as interlaced. In the tutorial this seems to be called a dreaded hybrid.

Trust me to pick one of the harder DVDs to encode.
