hello everyone,

I hope this is a simple question. Anyway here goes.

I have star trek the next generation series 1 - 7 on DVD and I am wanting to back these up to DVD+R in the following way: -

3 x episodes per DVD+R.

Static Menu.

1 x audio track per episode.

1 x subtitle track per episode.

Now I've looked through all the tutorials on Doom9 and I'm a little dumbfounded. Basically all I want to know is which tutorial would be the best one to follow for the above (keeping in mind that many of the doom9 tutorials are outdated and some software is no longer available).

Thanks

Hi,

there is no simple answer. I need more info. Is every episode in separate VTS, or there are more episodes in one VTS? Or are there only 3 episodes in one VTS and all others are separate?? I did Sex and the city season I and there were all mentioned scenarios on each DVD one  . So the most important question is what is the structure of your DVD?? How many VTS do you have??

It may look complicated but don´t worry - nothing is impossible ;)

for this project, you are probably best off demuxing the episodes into .m2v + .ac3, ripping the subtitles out, then using an authoring software (of your choice) to create your discs.

let us know which authoring software you prefer, and work from there.

in reply to coona, it'll be a seperate VTS for each one as I'll re-encoding the eps in cce.

all I want is one static menu with the 3 episodes listed and the choice of jumping between them.

Hello craigweb2k,

next step is to choose if you want to reencode each episode or leave it as it is.

1) Reencode scenario

a) Rip DVD to your HDD with DVD Decryptor or SmartRipper.
b) Make dvd2avi project for each episode and extract audio you want.
c) Make an avisynth script for each *.d2v
d) Add this script into CCE, set up all parametrs you want (it depends on the source - progressive x interleave, 4:3 x 16:9, etc.)
e) Extract your subtitles with subrip (you should know what authoring tool you´ll use because of subtitle format).
d) Author your new project - it differs one authoring tool to another

2) Not reencode scenario

a) Rip DVD to your HDD with DVD Decryptor or SmartRipper using stream processing option (follow Doom9´s guide).
b) After having *.m2v and audio files extract subtitles with subrip
c) Author your project

I prefer to "reencode scenario". You can put all episodes on one DVDR with only small loss in quality but it takes some time for reencoding.

What authoring tool will you use???

The authoring tool question is what I want to know.

Okay... I know how to encode using CCE I have done some 60 odd projects in it now using the excellent doom9 tutorial, but up until this point all I have done is authored the DVDs in IFOedit as 'movie only' dvds.

Now with the star trek project obviously using this method would be silly considering each episode is some 43 minutes long. And this is my problem.

When it comes to authoring DVDs with more than one video (lots of episodes) I am a n00b, I've never done it and all I want to do is have one static menu linking to maybe 3 or 4 episodes of star trek, that have been ripped by me and encoded to seperate VTS files using CCE.

All I want to know is what authoring tool to use for this scenario: -

All epsiodes have 5.1 audio, english only subs and the source is Interlaced.

As per my original post, a lot of the authoring packages dont exist anymore and a lot of the tutorials are out of date. Now ALL I want to know is (is there a tutorial (on doom9 or anywhere else) to author DVDs with the above scenario?).

If building seperate VTS files for each episode is a problem I am quite happy to leave them as m2v and ac3 files.

@craigweb2k

Sorry for late reply i´m in big hurry these days  .

There are only (i guess) 2 "authoring tool" guides on Doom9´s guide page - Maestro and Scenarist. Both are little bit complicated.

Maybe you can try one of guides on www.dvd2dvdr.com (e.g. http://www.dvd2dvdr.com/Spruce_Guide.htm).

I hope it will help.

C U :)

PS - there is also great guide from Trilight for creating menu in Photoshop and importing it into ReelDVD.
