I'm trying to compress an MPEG file using DivX 5.02 but im getting strange results. Everytime I encode in DivX, i get a file that's bigger than the original. I've tried so many different things: 2-pass at bitrates down to 100-200, quality based with quantizer of 30, 1 pass with bitrate of like 80-90, bumping up the max quantizer to 20.

Is there something special when going from MPEG to DivX that im missing here? I'm trying to help out a friend make some videos of a sketch comedy performance small enough to put on his site, but the my output avi's continuously come out ~100MB larger than the original MPEG.

If you need any more information about my procedure, tell me.

Hi-

What's the resolution of the original .mpg file? If you're raising the resolution a lot when converting to DivX (not much point in that, I don't think), then that could help explain it.

The MPEG is 352x240, but im not changing the resolution. Im running no filters on it at all. It seems strange to me that the filesize gets larger when i 'compress' it.

Maybe you forgot to compress the audio part:cool:

Yeah, it converts it from mp2 to wav in virtualdub. So the file will get larger.

oh, i had no idea that was happening. even if 'direct stream copy' is chosen? well, i just tried encoding without audio and it finally compressed. thanks for your help everyone.
