View Full Version : Why does .bin filesize exceed 800MB?
MDesigner
22nd February 2003, 02:06
I had a previous thread locked, not sure why. I read over the FAQ again and live Q&A... I saw a section that suggested "Uncheck min avg. and you could try setting min. bitrate to 0." I tried that, I still get these huge 849MB files.
If I'm missing something in the FAQ/Q&A, I apologize. I'd just like to at least get pointed in the right direction here...
Thanks.
PS: I understand filesize isn't really that important (obviously, since I'd be burning 800MB onto a 700MB CD). But, when I do try to burn the 2nd CD, I get a warning about overburning and possibly ruining the drive. The FAQ did not mention overburning, so I don't want to take the risk.

I had a previous thread locked, not sure why.Did you read the comments?
Your title did not conform to forum rules. You gave us no info and this type of problem is common.
I believe in fact you did read the comments since this post has all the information required to start and a good title.
I deleted the avs and ini files as those are not needed to start. Actually the avs file is included in the log file already.
My initial guess is that your problem is using CQ mode of TMPG. It is very unreliable and can result in this sort of a problem. In fact it's fairly common and a search on the right terms would find results, although sometimes knowing what those terms are can be problematic.
For more info on this try searching too big or TMPG large or any combination of words like this. I tried and got several good hits, but they all tend to say the same thing that it is CQ mode that is doing it.

Set the "file prediction factor" to 0.95 in the encoder tab. That should do the tirck.
EDIT:
I can see in the other thread that you have these filesizes:
CD1: 844,986,576 bytes
CD2: 848,603,952 bytes
That is 809 MB for each CD. Which is _perfect_ for 80 minutes CD-R's. Actually you can burn 815 mb images without overburn. Did you try to burn the images or did you post here because you thought there was a bug, without investigating a bit further?
If you need help for burning read the recommended way to do so in the Q&A

Hey
Thanks for the replies. I did a lot more searching and I think it's left me more confused. Some people say CQ is the way to go, just raise the offset to 90 or 100. Others say 2pass VBR is better quality. I'm sure both are good quality...but what I really want is to make sure the file will not exceed 800MB.
So should I raise the CQ Offset val? Or just switch to 2pass VBR? I'm not sure which would work better for me. I'll try 2pass VBR overnight and see how that goes.

Did you even bother reading dvd2svcd's reply? The file sizes you got are perfectly valid. Remember that one megabyte is not 1.000.000 but 1.048.576 bytes. Burn your .bin files (remember you actually have to select the .cue file), it will perfectly fit on a 700 MB CD. Remember that SVCDs are burnt in ISO mode 2, so the 800 MB will fit on a 700 MB CD.

I did read it, yes. I'm just a bit concerned about burning to CD when it warns me that it might damage the burner.
I was using Alcohol 120% to burn, though, which is a killer app. I will try the recommended app to burn instead and see if that works OK.
RB
22nd February 2003, 20:27
This tells me that you did select the .bin, not the .cue file to burn. For instance, in Nero, select File - Burn Image and select the .cue file.

RB,
No offense.. I may be a total DVD ripping newbie, but I'm no idiot with burning. Been doing it for years, I'm really familiar with cue, bin, iso, ccd, etc. I definitely did choose the .cue file to burn, because the .cue is what tells the burning software how exactly to burn the .bin data. The only thing I'm ignorant of in burning is overburning. I've never really had the need to do it. So now Alcohol 120% gives me an error saying it has to overburn, and warns that it might ruin my CD-RW drive. I don't want to take the risk.. or maybe it's no big deal, I really don't know.
By the way, if you don't know about Alcohol 120%, check it out..it's KILLER software, blows CloneCD and Nero away when it comes to image burning and doing exact duplicates. Also has built-in virtual drive just like Daemon Tools, but better. Very nice interface too.

If you want to stop the size being larger then you wish then you have really only two sure fire choices.
1. TMPG CBR mode
2. CCE multi-pass

If you want to get smaller images, just change the the CD-size in bitrate tab to 795 insted of 800. You can do this by tiping the value instead of using the pulldown.
I have my doubts about 'Alcohol 120% being the KILLER-application', because if it warns you with an image size of 809MB about overburning, either the app or the user did something wrong.
Try to burn it with the foolproof method from the Q&A, and this size of image will fit without overburning. (I hope you use 80min-CDRs, otherwise the warning is correct)

3. TMPG 2 pass

Ugh.. not working again
I tried ripping another film. This time, CD1 is 845,019,504 bytes and CD2 is a whopping 953,599,584 bytes! Whoa! What happened here?
My settings are all the same as before. My CQ value is 80 and file prediction is .95. I am not using fixed CQ value. Should I be? Anything else I can try, besides 2pass VBR (which takes forever)? Otherwise I might just do CBR.

I got the same problem too...just use CCE 2.5 instead of TMPGEnc.
MDesigner
28th February 2003, 06:02
Thank you, I'll give that a try
EDIT: OK, I tried it.. noticed there's no such thing as CQ with CCE SP 2.5. It uses multipass VBR. So I might as well just use 2pass VBR in TMPG, right?
markrb
28th February 2003, 06:42
CCE is much faster then TMPG. So you can get almost a 4 pass in CCE for the same time as 2 pass VBR in TMPG. Plus for Mpeg-2 the quality is better.

hi MDesigner,
if you want to use tmpgenc with CQ and get more than 142 minutes
in one cd ,or more time......,than read this,please...
my post is the 12 on the page:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42509&perpage=20&pagenumber=2
"i used this script to make a kvcd using dvd2svcd program...
with total time 142minutes in 1 cdr 700mb.(Dune)"
:) but i got 2 cds,one with 142m and other with more than 140m,
cos dune is too big! (with subs)
...and you can change the "resize" to cvd or svcd in dvd2svcd prog
and choose 2 cds for better results.
all you need is there, just copy the script and change few things,ok?
doubt?
please post!
thanks.
;)
