The new Windows Movie Maker 2 beta for XP has a good bit of power, especially for the price (free). My wife loves it and I use a couple of the transitions from it in VVegas, and it is real handy for doing a video montage of stills.
The only problem was it would hang when I was trying to do a DV encode of the montage with music. I finally figured out the solution. The music or naration track must be at 48k. MM2 chokes on 44k sound and since most people would use an mp3 for music they would run into problems. Hopefully this might save some hair for a few of you.
