I downloaded nic's standalone decoder form Koepi site last night.
Till now I was using ffdshow for xvid viewing.
The movie is perfect with ffdshow but not with nic's decoder!
Here is how I see a movie I encodec with nic's:

Make sure use the latest Nic's DSF dated 16_02_2003,
before that date is buggy :)
You can download it from the Nic's page. It's included in the
Nic's XviD build 16_02_2003.

Could you give me more info???
How old is the encode ?
How does the film look when loaded in VirtualDub? Do you have any post processing/forced colorspace turned on?
Do you know what settings the movie was encoded with? (QPel,Bframes, etc)

Cheers,
-Nic

Yo
The same movie is perfect when played in Vdub.

With the decoder I was simply using "DeringY" and "DeringC". But I also unchecked those 2 options and still problem persist. For the rest it was on default settings.

The movie was encoded with latest koepi dev build, frame served with avi synth to vdubmod. (No Qpel, No B-frames, No Lumi Masking)
I simply had GMC enabled and quantiz type is H.263
(other settings were the same as the one in dooms guide.
I did a 2 pass encode and both 1st pass and 2nd pass have the same problem!

Heres the thing I just noticed. Koepi hasn't put up my latest filter on his site yet. The one on his site says: XviD-Dec-291202.exe (137kb)
Thats the one from last year :) Maybe I should start putting up a DShow only version on my site.

Could you download my XviD Codec from my site. make sure it installs over the old xvid.ax ( when playing goto the properties of my filter if its got force colorspace option, then its the latest build :) )
Hopefully the file will play ok then :)

If that still doesnt work, could you cut out a meg of the file that shows the problem and send it to me? :)

Cheers,
-Nic

Just tried Nic's 16-2-2003, I don't think it solves the q-pel problem.

A standalone decoder would also be nice :)

After installing latest nic's build I kept the xvid.ax file from win system directory and what ever build of xvid that I install now I overright the xvid.ax with nic's .ax file.
But yes I also think a stanalone decoder would be apreciated by all.

Not much people have mentioned experiencing quality issues with playing back q-pel encoded movies... so I was just wondering whether if it is only a select few who are experiencing this problem (I have a feeling that it is only isolated to me). Does everyone have this problem.

In some of the posts people mention enabling q-pel for their encodes...do they not notice the smearing?

Nic,
your latest xvid.ax even though it works fine on my Geforce2MX directx9 in normal mode ,it also gives BLACK image when force yv12 is used instead. In fact,an IYUV decompressor is misplaced(?) between the filter and videorendener :( .Graphedit displays "Major Type: Video - Sub Type: IYUV - Format: IYUV 576x320, 12 bits
rcSrc=(0,0,0,0)
rcDst=(0,0,0,0)" along with YV12 format in XformOut pin.
Only the use of "overlay mixer" makes the filter to connect with video rendener in forceyv12 mode. When VMR9 is used instead of videorendener the filter connects only in noforce(YUY2 here),YUY2 mode and RGB32(RGB24 fails to connect also.A colorconverter comes between and forces argb32 output). These using latest detonators 42.30 directx9 compatibles
- Qpel smearing is still there ,i think
- What amazed me is that you can use brightness control either from within xvid.ax or from VMR9,or both !.Interesting effect !

hope i helped a bit,
regards,
george

I have tried ffdshow with both Xvid ticked and not ticked...and I have tried Nic's most recent DSF too. I still experience the problem with q-pel.

I think Koepi said that it would be solved in the next ffdshow release, I just thought it would be resolved in Nic's recent decoder. Iago also does not recommend encoding with q-pel enabled, I think.

The only problem is that I don't know how long ago I read those posts and I am not sure if it is ok to use q-pel again because ppl kept enabling q-pel in their Xvid tests.

It is not exactly smearing, the best way to describe it is that close up of faces appear to have more freckles than usual. It may take a trained eye to pick it up at first, but once you know what to look for, the difference is obvious.

i have had intermittent smearing problems with q-pel. Some days the movies work, others they don't. I have tried the 2 newest versions of ffdshow and the q-pel problem is gone but there is a problem with reading b frames as broken. The strange thing is the problem is intermittent with the second newest but consistent with the newest. Nic's decoder works perfectly but the files will not open in avisynth or TMPGenc. If there is no q-pel or GMC, using the dx50 fourcc code works. Oh yeah, I had ffdshow checked to decode with xvid but it appeared to not work. I had to uninstal ffdshow to properly decode with xvid.

@kastro: Well if its still happening in my decoder then XviD isn't decoding or perhaps encoding its Qpel properly. But to me it looks like everythings fine, so im looking into more now :)

@drebel: Strangely on my GeForce2 MX 400 all forced colorspaces worked fine. Ill look into it and try to work out whats going on.
(ill also make it so you can tell what colorspace is being outputted by going to the properties of the filter, as that will probably useful too)

Cheers,
-Nic

@Nic

Thanks for looking into it. I've been staring at the monitor very intently that I may have hallucinated, seeing freckles that aren't really there.

When I have time I'll encode 2 scenes with qpel+bframes on and off with the most recent xvid codec. Previously I have only used your decoder to playback a clip encoded with an older xvid codec.

I think kilgor3 has the same problem as me...I don't know if he solved it yet though.

PS: I still think that Al Gor3 would have made a better president than George Bush.

:) The image in my head that created made me smile lol

I couldn't spot the problem yesterday, nevermind try and find the cause :( Ill do some staring myself tonight. :)

@Nic

My apologies.

I just tried doing a short test encode with your latest codec and it seems that the q-pel induced freckles are gone. :)

But I'm still not 100% sure. It reminds me of the rocking chair . Late at night, to get to the fridge I have to go downstairs through the hallway and past a rocking chair which is about 5 meters away, in an adjacent gloomy room. Every time I walk by i would stare into the doorway... and after a while, the chair appears to gently rock itself :scared:

It sends me running up the stairs every time.

And the moral of the story is... if you stare at anything long enough, your eyes will start to play tricks on you. If your eyes don't play tricks on you, it just means that you haven't stared long enough.

Well im glad the "freckles" have gone...pretty much ;)

What you need, like I have, is a mini-fridge in your room :)
cold chocolate an arms reach away at midnight is a moment of decadence I cant live without :) (ghostly rocking chair or not ;) )

Cheers,
-Nic
