Ok you lot, this might sound like avery basic question, but what is the EXACT capacity of a DVD+/-R?

Before these new toys came out I was using TMPG on two pass mode and was always set conservative bit rate settings because of the long processing times. Now I want to be a bit more bullish with size settings to cram in as much as I can with the knowledge that I can always reprocess with only a few hours of wasted time.

OK so the stated capacity is 4500MB Right?, by my calculations thats

=4500 x 2^10 = 4,718,592,000kb

or if you are Instant Copying

=4500 x 2^10/2^20 = 4.39GB

Right, so in DVD2One I deducted the size of my extras in MB from 4500 and also took out an additional 5MB for safety. Once processed I added my extras back in, did my IFOupdate stuff and voila! a new VIDEO_TS of exactly 4,710,432,000kb - spot on I thought.

Loaded Nero, try to burn, and you guessed it - "Please insert disc with enough capacity". Bugger.

I even tried it again with another 5MB off the DVD2One target size - still no joy.

So come on then what's the EXACT capacity of a DVD+/-R (in kb,MB and GB) we should be targetting for? (Its not media dependent is it?)

Asked I don't know how many times before: http://forum.doom9.org/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=801189&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending

Sorry - I did do a search but was coming up with different answers. I will take Eyes Only's figure (as a well informed chap) as

Total= 4,704,317,440. 4,704,317,440 bytes=approx. 4.381237 Gigs.

That's 4486MB (not 4500) which explains the above problem. Thanks, I am all set now.

I have even more confusion to add...I read somewhere else about someone who wanted to simply copy a full DVD-R to DVD+R (ISO read/write) and it didn't work, because the image of the DVD-R was too big for the DVD+R...someone answered, indeed the capacity of a DVD+R is a bit smaller than that of a DVD-R...is this true?

Yes I think thats the case but the difference is small - less than 1MB(I think). I've heard two explanations for this -

1. Something to do with the Physical layer differences on the disc itself

2. The way that the copy protection is handled between the two formats.

My new target size of 4486MB for DVD+R (Ritek hybrid) works just fine and I am sticking to that.

But there are no differences between different brands/manufacturers of media (as with CD-R), are there?

So every DVD-R has the exact same capacity and every DVD+R has the exact same capacity, with DVD+R being marginally lower.
