Quality Suffers

I could not figure were to post my question so I chose here. If you rip a DVD and find it is only 2.5gig most people would just backup and forget it. My question is, if I re-encode it to take up more of the DVD do I loose quality? The reason for doing this is to take advantage of the TEXTID part of DVD. If anyone has a way without doing so please let me know.

Yes. You lose quality every time you encode. If you re-encode it to 4.7GB, you will have a bigger file at lower quality.

If you re-encode you will lose quality even if you increase the bitrate to fill the dvd, the reason is MPEG2 is a "lossy" compression algorithm. These losses can be minimized (thru the use of suitable bitrates and quantization levels) but not eliminated.

As an example if I re-encoded would you say I would loose 10% quality or some other number. Assuming a good encoder is used.

It's difficult to put a figure on how much quality is lost, but using latest CCE (2.66.01.07) and a method based on "Getting the best out of CCE" guide here on Doom9's site, recompressing a 2Hr movie of around 6gig to fit on a 4.7gig dvd-r it was hard to tell the difference in quality on my 19" PC monitor.

So would you say taking a DVD that was 2.7Gig and re-encoding it to 4gig I would not loose enough to be real noticeable?

what you may as well do is put another small movie on the disc if your worried about not using the whole disc up.

My reason was not just to use the disk. I simple wanted to take advantage of the TEXID feature of DVD's in order to load my system automatically with pictures and titles. Since it appears the only way the TEXID feature will work is if you encode it, hence the need to re-encode even if the movie would have fit without it. The reason I questioned using more space was to limit the loss in quality not just to use up the disk.

IMHO I don't think there would be any noticeable quality loss if you re-encode a 2.7gb DVD to 4.7gb. As long as you use CCE with some correct settings. To me it should look the same.

Could you detail more what TEXID is, and a concret use of it because I still fail to understand what your goal is.

The reason is my DVD player holds 300 disc and has the ability to read the TEXTID area and program the menus with out my doing it. It seems a little petty but it is has hassle to have to type in the title of what is on the disk when the system can do it on its own.

I have both the Sony CD and DVD jukebox players which both hold (300) disks apiece. They both read TEXTID and if that’s what you have, I’ve got good news for you. The TEXTID is not set by the encoder; it’s done by the burning program.

For CD’s I use Roxio and for DVD’s I use Nero. Both programs give you an area to put your TEXTID and both my Sony’s recognize the text and yes, it’s a lot easier that why than having to input each CD or DVD title.

I have been using Nero but have not found a place to input general text and have it show up on my player. I visted the Sony site and according to Sony you need to have the TEXTID field set for the player to read it. I found by setting the Jacket_P I could get images onto the menu and then I heard about the TexitID. Were in Nero did you find this place for text?

Any help would be great I sure hate having to re-encode. I kinda like the idea of my images and text popping up instead of Sony's lame

I don’t know about the images part, but here's what I do for TextId. In Nero, you rename the NEW that’s above the Video_TS and Audio_TS to the title of the movie (i.e. THE_LORDS_OF_THE_RING).
