This may sound silly but after reading so many posts about the crappy quality of InstantCopy I'm wondering if I should sue the Dr. that did my Lasik surgery. I've always been a big fan of the IFOedit/CCE complete method but figured I'd try InstantCopy. I was very impressed with the ease of making a complete DVD (menus and all) AND the quality. I may be blind but I really can not see a noticeable difference between CCE and Instantcopy, although I'm sure there is a difference. For very long movies (I.E. The Godfather) I think I'll still use CCE.

I had lasik too and it looks very good to me. I have to try it on a 3 hour movie though. But 2 hour movies look fantastic.
I do plan on doing a screenshot test of picture quality percent soon. What it looks like at 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%.

Quality really goes out the window when you go below 50%.

40% is un-watchable.

Depends what it is, Simpsons seemed ok at around 48%.

I would love to see some quality % screen shots.

Are most people leaving things at the default settings or upping the percent for the main movie ect?

I did Pearl Harbor Region 4 PAL which is 183mins. The quality is still very very good. I also did it using the CCE method. Roboshot+3 passes and ... yes its's better but took longer and no menus. Horses for courses really. Used DVD2One on the other hand on the same movie and the quality was not so good but 30 mins... against several hours. I think that for most backups IC7 will do the job. It's simple and the quality is almost as good as the original and there are very few steps involved. If you spend more time on it then perhaps you're better not worrying about a backup and re-buying the movie (if it's still available) when something happens to the original. Of course doing it the hard way is a lot of fun :D

So Enzo, what settings did you use for Pear Harbour? Did you leave the default percent, or up the main movie? Did you remove anything ect...? And what was the percent values?

It greatly depends on the number of extras on a DVD. If its all movie, with like 5 minutes of extras, the quality is GREAT. But on a DVD that has hours of extras, it gets really bad.

One solution would be to lower the quality of the extras a lot, and then raise the main video quality. If you don't want the extra's, then I'd suggest DVD2One.

On a few tests I did that was all content, no extras I could not tell the difference between the DVD and InstantCopy.

Yep, good examples
Jay and silent Bob strike back. Very little extras, and actually the video itself wasnt that much over 4, but it came out brilliant. Menus and all.

Enemy at the gates. Tried using DVD2One and Make it easy etc, keeping the movies and the deleted scenes on that, made the movie quality very degreading to the point that pixelation occured in some expolison effects.

Scrapped all the jazz, just went for the movie itself, and bam 100% better, great quality.

Trying it with Instant copy now. All extras, bar Menus have been compressed as low as it can go, 30%, and the movie the best I could leave it is 76%.

Will be intresting to see how it goes.
Realistically though I question why I am keeping the menus etc, if I have compressed the extras to the point that they will look poor, actually I even removed the audio tracks for the originals. Its just nice to have the menus really, but I guess thats the choice.
1. Use Instant Copy and compress the extras just to get good video + menu
2. Use DVD2One get good video no menu or anything.
3. Use CCE etc, and 100 other tools and a few hrs time, and get menus + movie.

I guess it just comes down to each individual movie and if you care that its got a menu or not?

At 70% or better, I really can't tell the difference. I'm done with the CCE methods now.

60% isn't too bad either, and CCE would also take a hit as well if the movie is so big that it requires that much compression (like an 8GB disc).

I kept just the movie and the main menu. I'm at work now and dont have the details with me right now but will check my settings tonight and put it in another post.

I did (gone in 60 Seconds) ripped out foreign Audio, lowered the video to 30% for all extras and 80% for the main movie.
I was really impressed how good quality the Video was at 80% (I could hardly see any diffrence if looking at original and the transcoded dvd)

Right now Im ripping (The Rock)
Main movie is 131 minutes so to get the quality to +70% I first ripped all subtitles in IFOEdit left just swedish that saved me about 300Mb for better video in main movie.
In instantcopy I ripped foreign Audio and hit the start button think I had 74% in video quality .

Will be interesting to see the end result :)

Did Enemy at the gates again last night, with 76% of the video, and 30% for the extras, wasnt too bad, in comparison to when I ripped with dvd2one down to 3.6 it was way better, but still

My hang up at the momment is decieding what I want, in that I dont care for the extras, all I really want is the menu+movie.
But I keep havcing problems pulling that off with other tools other then IC.

But with IC I get stuff I dont want, and lower quality video. Ahh all tough decisions, hehe I remember, when I was just happy when DVD2One came out, and made it so easy, I think im just getting plain picky now hehe.

How about building the movie you want, say Main movie and the chapter selection menu with ifoedit, then running instantdvd on the result ?

Get what you want, squeezed into 1 DVD :D

I've done at least 10 movies with IC all ranging in length, from 90 mins to over 3 hrs. Dr Zhivago was the last 3hrs 14mins with no problems at all. I lower the Menus and Extras, trying to keep the Main movie above 70%. Everything has burned first time, no hangs, no errors or unplayable disks. Cant wait for my Full Copy of the version to arrive. Ordered it 1 week ago from Amazon, Ive only 7 days left on the trial... I hope they hurry up.... Thanks

What are you talking about ...since when could you NOT just keep only the menu and main movie in Instant Copy? With registry trick it's just a matter of deselecting all the extras, trailers and other cruft.
