At my last lan party I noticed something strange, a guy who was sitting nest to me copied a divx from mine to his computer.
When he tried to play the 'dowloaded' divx from his computer, it had no video  . But when he tried to play the movie over the LAN (opening the movie from my hard disk on his PC) it worked!?!?

Can somebody explain me waht was going on?

PS: I had the codecs, and on my PC it played well. After I installed the codecs on his comptuter, it worked also without problems..

Thanks

ok,
i don't know if this works for movies too, but when you use a printer over the LAN, windows is autmomatically getting the drivers over the net, so it might be, that when he was accessing your movie, windows also got the drivers, but didn't install them.

just an idea though!

Thankt what i thought too, it's one logical explanation, but if this is true, how can it get the dll's (from the codecs) from my PC if i ONLY had the folder with the divx shared?!

well that does not depend on the folder you've shared. again the printer example: i just have to enable the printer sharing protocol and everybody can access the .dlls for my printer. anyway, that's the explanation i can give. perhaps it's something completely different.
