Avisynth installation problem

I liked the look of avisynth and decided to
install it onto my PC (running XP) at home
but am having problems using it. I fell at
the first hurdle when looking at the tutorials
and cannot get any further: Then I create a
simple .avs file containing only 'Version',
instead of showing the version details it gives
the error message 'Cannot find the file'. This
error message is present in both Movie Player and
virtualDub.

Any ideas?

How did you open the AVS file? Maybe you typed an incorrect path. Try dragging and dropping the AVS file onto VirtualDub. What happens?

No, I opened the file by double-clicking on it
(and right-clicking and selecting 'open with')
, so it is nothing to do with mistyping.

1) What happens if you open vdub first, and open the avs file in vdub?

2) How did you name your avs file?

Post the exact contents of your avs file and tell us its exact filename.

- I get the same error when the file is opened
from virtual Dub

- The file was called test.avs and contained
the word 'version' (without the quotes) and
nothing else.

Reboot in safe mode (F8) and reinstall avisynth.
Try again.

Before you do that can you copy test.avs to your root dir (c:\) and try to open from there.

Also try renaming the avisynth plugins dir to something else to keep it from autoloading.

make sure no .avs files are in your plugins folder

I evenutally fixed the problem by moving back to a previous
restore point under WinXP and reinstalling avisynth. THis lets
me use virtualdub but I still have the original problem with
MediaPlayer- but I'm happy to use VDub, so all is well!!!
