Sony Writer?

Hi all, any news on the writer?

Whats going on? I hear its getting canned :( boo/hiss :)

Not canned. New version just came out a few weeks ago. I picked up a DRU-500AU(i think that is its number). It does 4X for DVD-/+R and does +/-RWs. Works like a charm. Only draw back is slow rip speed, so you want to have a DVD-Rom drive to ripping. Also, the CDR is a bit slow at 24x compared to new 52x burners.

Also, no new firmware as of yet for it. It comes with the latest version that sony had to use to fix issues with the previous version of the drive.

The new drive is around $349 for the internal version. I noticed at Fry's Electronics the other day that they had a ton of them on the shelves.

How slow is the ripping speed on it?

Sorry, don't know of any specific on-line retailers. Try pricegrabber.com or mysimon.com

As for Rip speed, its somewhere around 1x from what I've read. I've never done a Rip with my sony, I instead just use the DVD-Rom drive I also have installed.
