Square blocks when playback ... why?

Hello,

I did some research here but I did not find the answer to my problem (at least using my wording I did not find anything). Anyway, the problem I am experiencing is that when I play back a DVD-R in my TV, whenever there is some motion the image shows with tons of little square boxes (about 1/4 inch big each). However, the original AVI file plays fine in my PC. I am using TEMPGEnc to reframe this file using 4500 bit-rate, so I don't think I am short in bit rates considering that the entire video is 115 minutes long.

If anyone has any idea or can direct me to the right direction I will appreciate it (please don't tell me to search in www.VCDHelp.com since the search engine is down).

What type of video is it? If fast action it could be your bit rate.
I would take about 30 seconds of the worst part from your video, render it to MPEG-2 with different bit rates and (with TMPGEnc) set the quality to 10, also try different setting for search motion quality (I think, don't have it in front of me) and watch the results.

Also, are You using VBR or CBR? Try CBR with 5500 bit rate for test.
If You're not experienced with TMPGEnc, CBR will give you a better result.
There are too many variables in the whole process, so experiment until it works for You.

P.S.
I've seen this with MPEG-1 (VCD) but never as bad with MPEG-2 (DVD)
