As a result of a weekend of testing, there appears to be SOME problem with the Pioneer A03 drive using Instant Copy (both the 15mb demo and the 'unofficial' release).

Thus far, I have been totally UNABLE to burn a disc using the IC7 internal burning engine from a PDI file.

The Participants...

Test Discs -

Dark Angel S2, D1 - R2 Release
Six Feet Under S1, D1 - R1 Release
Forever Knight - a homemade compilation of 3 eps from S1 that come out to 4.9gb when the disc image is authored under ULead DVD Workshop.

DA2 and 6FU were ripped with DVD Decrypter in BOTH file and ISO mode
FK was authored to BOTH a VIDEO_TS folder and ISO file.

The Burners -

Pioneer A03 burner, FW 1.68 modified Region-Free - this burner can burn using Prassi, DVD Decrypter and Nero ALL DAY LONG with nary a bobble.

Panasonic LF-D321, FW UNK - Ditto.

The OS's -

SYS1 - Win2k Sp3
SYS2 - Win98SE

The tests...

Default compression used on all IC7 runs.
Both the VIDEO_TS folders and ISO images (mounted via Dameon Tools)
were processed to produce 6 sets of PDI files.

Condition 1. SYS1 with A03 using IC7.

Attempted burns with IC7. FAILED on EVERY attempt with IC7 Internal burning engine.
Each burn failed at a 'random' point between 7% and 65% with a 'Device Timeout' (Buffer underrun?)

Condition 2. SYS1 with LF-D321 using IC7.

Six successful burns. No Issues.

Condition 3. SYS2 with A03 using IC7.

Six failures.

Condition 4. SYS2 with LF-D321 using IC7.

Six successful burns.

Condition 5. SYS1 with A03 using PDI2ISO/DVD Decrypter.

Converted the PDI files to an ISO file and burned with DVD Decrypter.

Six Successful burns.

Condition 6. SYS1 with LF-D321 using PDI2ISO/DVD Decrypter.

Six Successful burns.

Condition 7. SYS2 with A03 using PDI2ISO/DVD Decrypter.

Six Successful Burns

Condition 8. SYS2 with LF-D321 using PDI2ISO/DVD Decrypter.

Six Successful Burns.

Failure Matrix.

DA2/PDI 6FU/PDI FK/PDI DA2/ISO 6FU/ISO FK/ISO
SYS1/A03 FAIL FAIL FAIL SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS
SYS2/A03 FAIL FAIL FAIL SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS
SYS1/LFD321 SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS
SYS2/LFD321 SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS

Conclusion.

The Burn Engine/Driver in IC7 for the A03 HAS A FLAW. It may be related to the firmware of the drive. But it HAS A FLAW.

Once the new version of DVD-Decrypter is releases that handles PDI files directly, this is a moot point.

Well, that's nice... but you are using a different fw than I, so that can validate the problem...

ADDENDUM.

The 1.68 in the A03 is the Regionless hack FW. If you want to chime in with 'mine works' or "mine dosen't" Please indicate if you are running STOCK firmware or Region-Free (that could be a valid data point)

Burn several DVD (Signs, The Others, 101 Dalmatians II Etc..) without any problem. Pioneer A03 with FW 2.0 regionfree and 2x4all hacked.
