Must have codecs

Hello

I did a fresh windows install and this time i dont want to install any codecs pack.

What would be the MUST HAVE CODECS and/or related software.

I need to:

Watch videos encoded with any Divx version
Watch videos encoded with any Divx version

I dont want to have any sound problems, ever.
I also need a simple program that gives me the ability to have subtitles directly on WMP 6.4 - i've been using VobSub from Nimo pack and it works nice, but _sometimes_ make the movie very slow (i got a tbird 1.2 ghz with 256ddr and windows 2000 and directx9).

I never encode videos, i just watch.

install ffdshow (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Filters/ffdshow-20021213.exe) -- it supports most MPEG4 codecs, such as DivX 3/4/5, XviD, MPEG4V3, etc.

For audio, that will depend upon the audio used by the encoder. Common audio codecs are MP3 and AC3.

Install GSpot (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Editing/gspot21.zip) to determine codecs used in any AVI container.

Do you actually mean that if i install FFDSHOW (which i did on my other machine before) i dont need to install DIVX and XVID ?

Dont get me wrong i appreciate any suggestions but i did mention i wasnt going to encode anything thus i dont care for subtitles rippers.

Well, you can't encode anything with ffdshow. And there is a few minor bugs, so do yourself a favour and dl new versions from sourceforge as they become available.

oh i think i didn't get you wrong... still within this guide there's a method explained to playback (and do- which of course doesn't matter for you ) subtitles: the exacr link subsami explanation (http://www.doom9.org/subtitle_guide.htm#WMP) of course it ALSO tells you how to creat these subtitles (:

PS: you'll need this program for displaying subs in WMp WITOUT using Vobsub Subsami (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Subtitles/sub2sami.zip)
depending on your subtitle source you'll also need a converter which can also be found in the downloads section
