Does anybody know why Nero v.5.5.9 will burn useable RW DVD's but makes beer coasters out of R's ?

I've wasted 3 blanks already trying to burn a movie, but a RW worked first time.

I even tried a straight copy off the RW...but...another coaster.

Every now and then the R's will work, but mostly not, and I use the same media always (Mitsubishi).

I was going to try UDF/ISO template (instead of the DVD-Video template), but I can't afford experimenting as DVD blanks here in Australia are fairly expensive.

Has anyone got a good "R" media burn ratio with any Nero version, or know of another program that's better?

Try other media and upgrade Nero.
You are a few versions behind.
or better yet try a better DVD burning program.
You should try Prassi Primo DVD or
RecordNow MAX.

What's the kind of your burner? IF it is a DVD+R(W)-burner it is likely, that you have to upgrade your burners firmware because there are a bunch of new media out there.

I had no single coaster since I've upgraded my firmware to 1.51 (Philips DVDRW-228k). And using Nero 5.5.10.7 solves a lot of standalone compatibilty issues.

Now the new cheapest media runs fine even on my child's old Lasonic DVD-2000.
