What are the main difference between the two? Which one is better?

Why GKnot is using VirtualDub to compress the video and NanDub to merge the video and audio?

Hi-

What are the main difference between the two? Which one is better?

You'll have to be the judge. They both have their pros and cons. Try a short section of a movie and encode it using both codecs. You might find Doom9's Codec Comparison (http://www.doom9.org/codec3-1.htm) useful.

Why GKnot is using VirtualDub to compress the video and NanDub to merge the video and audio?

VDub doesn't support VBR audio. You can use VDubMod for both, if you prefer.

You forgot to mention that compressionwise Nandub is only for Divx3.1 SBC while VDub/VDubMod can use any installed vfw codec.

VirtualDub is the original video-editing program by avery lee

Nandub is modification of Virtualdub by nando.

1) Nandub is tuned for better DivX3 support (called 'Smart Bitrate Control'). You will see this main difference when you open the video-tab in virtualdub and in nandub, in vd you will see the 'compression' option (which is used for example with divx5 or xvid encodings), in nandub you will see 'sbc options' (used with DivX3).

2) The next difference, manono already described, is that you can mux mp3s (both vbr and cbr) into an avi with nandub, which isnt possible in virtualdub for some reasons

As manono also already said if you want to mux audio and video you can now use VirtualDubMod, which is a new Virtualdub modification, which includes Nandubs mp3 options but also allows muxing ogg vorbis streams and much more...

if you want to make DivX3 rips you should still use Nandub (together with GKnot)

EDIT: Ups Belgabor was a little bit faster

You forgot to mention that VDubMod also allows creation of Ogg Media files.

virtualdub can not recognize non cbr compliant wav files
cbr= Constant Bit Rate, kinda like doing a 1 pass encode, each frame recieves equal amout of bits
vbr= Variable Bit Rate, the bit rate can be changed to compensate for additional data sections and redundant data sections (like 2 pass encoding)

the program besweet only encodes in vbr, which is LAME based
so far the only way to encode cbr is via the hacked Fraunhofer IIS codec

nandub deals with divx 3 encoding while virtualdub can use any codec
the neat thing is that nandub has automated 2 pass encoding, definately a plus in any coders book =)

When you save an avi with NanDub you also have the option to add various info tag (autor, comment, ...), VirtualDub don't have this.

I have been using VirtualDub for taking out clips from videos with direct stream copy. Also I use it to join video files. I never use it for compression or recompression. If the video I'm working on has vbr audio the resulting clips are desynced and joining isn't possible. Should I use VirtualDubMod for this kind of work?

Don't just reply to the first thread google brings up, at least check the dates, this one's four and a half years old. Especially if it isn't related to the topic.

VDM should work, though VD 1.7.x or avidemux should also work.
