I have looked through the Q&A, the FAQ, and searched for similar posts on "I/O Error 103" but none of them solved my particular problem. I have used dvd2svcd many times before and never had any issues, so I think it's related to this specific DVD.
I am trying to rip a DVD which is sort of "unprofessional", meaning it's not a big movie. It's video of a certain stand-up comedian, which plays just fine in my stand-alone DVD player and my DVD-ROM.
When trying to rip, I don't get very far. This happens immediately after reading the DVD:

And it stops there, although dvd2svcd still thinks it's "active" when I try to close it.
I have been using the same machine/components for some time now, so I attribute this error to the fact that the production isn't professional.
Please advise. And thanks in advance.

I've had dvds that were beyond repair...toothpaste didn't work nor did freezing them in the freezer. Thus why it's such a good idea to backup as soon as you buy it. Next time don't wait so long.

This is a brand new DVD. As I said, it plays fine. Could I get a more relevant reply from someone please?

Nice and friendly reply to a Senior well respected member.
I am of the mind not to help you, but will give you the benifit of the doubt on this one.
It sounds like it could be an Aspi problem.
Have you successfully ripped other DVD's with DVD2SVCD?
Try Vstrip next and if that fails as a last resort try SmartRipper.

hmmm...ok the snake bites me in the butt....Just now I got that error too. First time ever too. This is off a custom dvd-r though so I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Also I had frame selection because near the end there's quite a bit of slack space with no video. But this is all my log shows. I would pm you if I could but I don't see a button for you. Next step I'm going to use dvddecryptor.

edit:
Ok I'm almost 99% sure this is related to empty frames. This paticular dvd the end has 3mins 45secs of absolutely no video..just pure black. Anyway after I ripped it with dvddecryptor that worked then started converting it and just frame cut out the black part. I problem was internal routines 'hanging' if you will at the empty GOP frames. So in this case just use an external ripper.

well hopefully this solves your problem modul8r, if it doesn't report back here.

mrbass,
it seems that my problem is related to yours. I checked my DVD and it has a couple of minutes of black space at the end.
I have never used DVD Decrypter before but I installed it and ripped the DVD as suggested, which completed successfully. I see the .vob files and the .ifo that DVD Decrypter left for me but I am not exactly sure what to do with them.
You say that I need to 'convert it and frame cut out the black part' but I don't know how. I am only a novice dvd2svcd user. I'm sure the process is quite simple and I would really appreciate assistance that you or anyone else can give me!

uncheck DVD rip...no need to re-rip it...select the .ifo from your hd that dvddecryptor ripped. Check "frame selection". Then start the conversion..."Start conversion". Once dvd2avi analyzes it then up will pop the frame selection window...move the slider pointer to the end of the movie just where the black empty space kicks in. Click 'set end frame'. Then click 'update range'. Then click ok. That's from my head so some terms might be off but that's the general idea.

Be aware that DVD Decrypter has known issues with DVD2SVCD.
These issues don't happen all the time, but enough to warn people about.
However sometimes you just have to try it.

I have been getting the I/O error 103 with certain DVDs, and none of the various work arounds I found here worked. After a bit of trial and error, I found using vStrip vs. Internal Routines resolved my problem.

In my instance, I got the error consistantly whenever I tried to encode anything.. it gave me the error right off the bat. I began to notice that I recently updated dvd2svcd to the latest version so I uninstalled new version and reinstalled the older version I was(and still am) using, 1.2.1 build3.. I normally only encode avi->svcd and it works great for that... if anyone is still having this error this is worth a try...
