in part 2 it says :-
Now press the Save&Encode button which brings up the encoder tab:
but it doesnt it brings up a file dialog, so i closed it and went looking for the settings it showed, found them on the encoder tab, tried to go from their but i handt created the avs synth file as i didnt realise that thats what it was going to do. Eventually after about half an hour I went back and hit save when it brought up the file dialog and THEN the encoder tab appeared. Ahhhh NOW I SEE!! Can you please update the guide so others don't have to suffer.
Anyway I followed the rest of the guide and it didn't work - I dunno why maybe cos the audio that dvd2avi produced was a .mpa file. What a convoluted way of getting nowhere. I have used it before on dvd vobs but it doesnt seem to work with .mpgs - is there a way to make it work .
To be honest I've wasted about 2 days on a simple ideal of mpeg->divx and it is still as ridiculously convoluted as ever - no wonder not many people bother. For DVD rips now I would just uses dvd2one and make a dvd as making a divx is still a total pain in the ****. And I spent years writing in assembly language as a kid so its not the technical problems that gets me its just the total insanity of the whole thing - yer I'm frustrated - if i had the time/interest I'd write a proper program to do it but other projects are of more interest/need - I've tried about 5 diff methods of mpg->divx and guordian is deffo the stupidiest, prolly great for dvd's but...
I have found issues in other doom9 guides, which defeats their purpose, You ought to get a non techie computer user to step through the guides as you watch (or irc) to see where things are innacurate. Not saying they aren't very much appreciated BUT it is maddening when they r wrong in places and you get frustrated trying to guess the next bit.
(on latest dvd2avi some menus have moved around which makes dvd2avi guide confusing to (if u use latest dvd2avi))

Simple answer: Don't rely the on the guides for everything. They are meant to help you; you don't have to use them. I found the guides very helpful when I first read them quite awhile ago.
Now press the Save&Encode button which brings up the encoder tab:...... found them on the encoder tab
Yeah, you found them where they are. Your problem is?....
I wouldn't go asking around for updated guides; no one else seems to have issues like this, so I'm saying it's a user-error. Learn about the programs you're using, and don't complain when something isn't drawn out perfectly for you. The guides are excellent, and shouldn't require updating until new releases are put out.

> Yeah, you found them where they are. Your problem is?....
um as stated - let me repeat:-
Guide says: " Now press the Save&Encode button which brings up the encoder tab"
I say: "but it doesnt it brings up a file dialog"
 etc...
The guides are NOT excellent - How can they be when they have such glaring errors in them, though these days excellence is awarded to anything - they're average. maybe GK has changed since they were done I dunno - I am currently unistalling and reinstalling GK as I got nothing at the end of it, it ran the job and claimed to have created an avi which it didn't. I think that it didn't lauch vbub. Incidentally I have done similar things automating OTHER apps. and it checks that the prog is there after it launches it as well as auto-locating them. GK had wrong locactions for nandub / vdub. WHich I fixed but it still didnt work. WHy is the GKnot log running backwards? it goes from top down? someone tell em to use a listbox and add each line to the end and set the current line to be the last one..

here's the logfile from GK on a 3min testfile (no audio) :-
Now I;ve run the same file manually via DVD2avi + avisynth + vdub with no probs. it seems to indicate that gknot has only counted '0' frames !!! If there's an obvious answer ? but I've wasted far tooo much time on this and am about to bin it. Or does GKnot not work for /mpg's only vobs?

Usually when these things happens it's because there is a problem with the AVS file. Quite frankly I'm not sure I believe you when you say you have run the same AVS in VD manually, or at least it seems very unlikely (unless you have updated AviSynth very recently). please post the AVS and the version of AviSynth you are using.

So, yes, there's an error, thanks for pointing it out. But the way you point it out and talk here, that's just plain insulting. This passage has been the same for approximately the last year and you're the only one who needs 2h to handle it.. what does that say about you? Instead of trying to understand why when you press a button that says save & encode a save window will appear you're making it awfully easy for you by just putting the blame somewhere else.
Or what about dvd2avi? GKnot comes with DVD2AVI 1.76 the last time I checked.. so what is there to bitch about when you use a new version that isn't officially supported? You're allowed to do that but then don't put any blame where it doesn't belong.. you chose to use a new version so it's YOU to blame if something doesn't work like it should.
As for the log, in western countries we read documents from top to bottom;)
Let me give you a piece of advise: You already have two strikes. If you continue like this it won't take you long to get more and be suspended so you might want to rethink the way you communicate here (I bet you wouldn't dare to talk to people like that in real life because you'd be making a lot of enemies).

In my quest to create a guide that any semi-computer literate person to use, this has highlighted something i could fix....
but as they said, it could have been worded better.

Does this program read avi or avs, or just d2v, as did the first versions of GKnot?

it can read everything AviSynth can read
