Best basic set top DVD PLayer

Hi All,

I'm looking at getting just a basic set top DVD player for use with my 80cm tv. I use a HTPC for most playback, but as it goes through a projection system, it really isn't suitable for social DVD watching with a few beers and friends. THe other main reason I want it is to test my DVD-R's on. Can anyone suggest a make/model to me? Thanks.

i use an NAD T531 for dvd-playback and it totaly suits my needs. i also do most playback with my htpc, so i just bought a basic player. but it's rather expensive, though sound is very good (NAD's phylosophy: "music first").

but i think you can go to your local discounter and buy the cheapest player you can get, most of them play all different kinds of media, so that shouldn't be a problem and you can still return it if it doesn't suit your needs.

Thanks for the replay downloada. I just got back from getting a DVD player. I ended up getting a Pioneer DV-355-K (http://www.av.pioneeraus.com.au/av/catalogue/products/dvd_players/dv-355/dv-355_product.htm). It's meant to play just about anything, but I'm having a bit of trouble with it playing my first attempt at creating DVD movie.

Although PowerDVD XP, and my mates Playstation 2 picks it up straight away, my new 355 says it can't play the disc. I created the DVD with Nero 5.5.9.17 and was just a straight DVD rip of The 5th Element. I guess the fun starts here :rolleyes:.

yeah, now the fun can begin ;)

first, you should look for your player in the compatibility database at dvdrhelp.com (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers), that can save you a lot of time.

the next step would be testing different brands of dvd-r-media and/or different burning-software.

since i don't have a dvd-burner (yet), i can only tell you what i heard/read so far...

Cool, thanks for that link downloada. I found in one of the user reviews that he had no luck playing DVD's created with Nero either.
