i have two video files: 'Femme Fatale.avi' and 'Sum of all Fears.avi', both DVD-rips
the first one has no video, the second one no sound, but awesome video quality!!
i roamed the net and this forum and found that i have to download suitable codecs.
i got Nimo 5.0.8, XviD112502, XviDcore 0.9.0 (each one after i found that the previos one didn't work) and unzipped, unrar'ed or installed the files onto my hdd
now , they're just sitting there in no perticular folder and my problem isn't solved
my best guess is that i just have to put the codecs in the right folder to make it work
i hope the solution is that simple!
i have DivX The Playa, RealOne, Windows Media Player,... none of them play the files right
if someone knows the answer, please explain step by step what i should do, i have no experience whatsoever with codecs or ripping DVD's
thanks in advance for the solution!

I was pointed to a program called GSpot. It will
show you which audio/video codec was used to encode
the avi. I don't know if it will help but it sure
won't hurt.
I also was given some good advice about a filter call ffdshow
that played an avi encoded in Xvid that didn't play before
(with my current Xvid codex) If I remember you have to
configure it though. Both of these programs can be found here.
If you're useing win2k or XP you can check your installed codecs by
going to device manager (right click my computer, properties, Hardware tab,
device manager) then expand sound, video and game controlers, then right click on
either your audio or video codec
(depending which you want) hit properties, then the properties tab.
Unfortunately these names aren't easy to associate with
a codec "name" they will be mostly .dll files. Gspot might
even do this for you I'm not sure off hand. But there
is a program. If you want the name let me know and I'll
post it when I look it up on my other PC. I think most of this
is sound advice (one newbie to another)
if not these guys will correct me :)

i've downloaded an ac3 audio filter and now 'sum of all fears' has audio!!
can i now burn the file to svcd and play it on my standalone dvd-player?
yet, still no video for 'Femme fatale'!!

If the file seems to play fine, I would encode a little bit of it first. Then play the svcd in windvd or power dvd and see if you like the results. It beats wasting hours in encoding and not likeing the end result. Which method are you going to use to convert it?

well it is not as simple as this...
you have to convert the file to the right format so you can play it on your standalone. as you said you have got an avi file with an ac3 soundtrack, this will not be playable anywhere else, but on your computer.
this might sound confusing, but there's help in sight :)
check out this guide which will guide you thorugh the process of creating a SVCD you can then burn and play on your standalone.

hope this helps

PS: and for your 'no video' problem, check out gspot as caffeine addict told you.
