After spending $59.00 on 100pk Rima,
if they stop working after a month,
who's to blame?
How you guys say I am getting what I paid for?
They should be having some Warranty, I guess.

Any thoughts as we spend hours to convert these
DV tapes to DVD-R which might not last a month.

I know I can spend more and more on Ritek but... ;(

Taiyo Yuden state a 100 year life expetancy for their DVD-R discs. That is enough of a reason for me to use them.

The reason I recomend ritek over princo is not because of reliability, but because of their larger compatibility with standalone DVD players, and their ability to be written at 2x speed.

You paid $59 for a 100 pack at rima, so you must have bought princo's which we've complained about in this forum over and over again.

for backing up my miniDV movies, i use TDK and verbatim. not worth it, going with the cheap disks. i use cheap disks for backing up regular movies.

I have been using 1x Princo DVD-RW White tops for the last several months. I paid .83 each for them and DVD movies play perfectly in my Panasonic R22 and Xbox backup games play perfectly in my Xbox. I am not certain I understand what the issue is with the discs? I have never had a disc fail in my A04 nor have I ever had one fail to erase. Am I leading a charmed life or should I be expecting the discs to fail in the future?

Well, I am yet to buy.

I wish there is some certification
for DVD-R media that once certified,
it should play in any player which can
play atleast one brand DVD-R.

Anyway, I am still helpless.

"....I wish there is some certification for DVD-R media..."

When manufacturing discs, it takes one little particle to turn the disc into junk.

And if there was, would You pay the premium for this 100% impossible in a mass production inspection?

"...I know I can spend more and more on Ritek but..."

just doesn't sound like it.

there is, it's called 2x certification. And most discs that are offically certified by pioneer for 2x use are generally of very good quality.

To be able to play in your DVD player it's up to the maker of the DVD player to support DVD-R media's. There is no way a DVD Burner maker can force a DVD player to work if this has not happened. Just buy a DVD player that is known to support burned DVD's.

Gopalk, just buy Ritek G03's or G04's. You wont' go wrong with those. They are very compatible with just about all the DVD players out there, except some old junky ones that should probably be thrown out anyway.

If a player doesn't even play Ritek G03/G04 when writing at 1x, then you could try Taiyo Yuden discs, but a better player would be a good idea as well.

But if they *degrade*, then there was something wrong with the discs (bad discs, exposed to sunlight or extreme cold, or something like this)
