View Full Version : DivX encoding on XP fails everytime - why?

While I am fairly new to this, I've had success in the past.

I used to run Smartripper 2.34, FlaskMPEG 0.54 on Windows 2000 Pro
flawlessly. The quality was ok, but it did the job.

Now I'm on XP and I have yet to have one successful conversion. I can still rip a DVD fine, but the conversion to divx fails everytime.
I've tried every combination of flask 0.54, 0.60, 0.78 AND divx 3.x, 5.03. No luck. The system completely freezes between 1 and 9 % every single time. I've even tried DVD2AVI and that has the exact same result. Even with completely different machines I get the same result. Right now I'm running an AMD Athlon 2100+, 512MB, Asus M/B, ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon AGP, and Sound Blaster Live! 5.1.

Can anyone help me?

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Random crashes are frequently a sign of system instability-overheating resulting from overclocking or not enough fans or some such. If I were you, before going any further I'd run Prime95 to test the CPU and maybe Mem86 to test the memory. Nothing stresses a computer quite like video encoding.

And have you read the Guides (http://www.doom9.org/divx-encoding.htm) on this site?

You were right. Less than one minute on Prime95 and I got an error. So I guess I need to look at fan configuration, Power Supply, memory, and maybe a better CPU fan.

That explains why the last time I tried this it worked. I was on a Dell PIII-500. Now I'm on a generic AMD 2100+, big difference in quality and speed. But while I am running, I'm getting 30 fps output. So there's hope.

Thanks.
