Read speed on dru500a

Hello fellow forum helpers,
I bought a new sony dru500a. The maximum speed I can read is about 2x. It should read up to 8x. I tried to enable DMA but it didn't work. I have ME OS. Is there anything else I can try to maximize the reading speed? I appreciate any help.

I don't want to harp on two known facts, but they are going to be said by someone anyway.

1. ME sucks as an OS. If you need a 98 version OS 98SE is far superior. If you can XP is far superior to the 98 OS's.

2. The Sony DRU-500a is known to be very slow at reading DVD's. This is why I chose my DVD-ROM over my CD burner to keep in my computer.

I had ME installed for like 6 hours. Hated it, went back to 98SE. Now, XP rocks.

Well, Microsoft doesn't offer ME anymore. They're still offering 98SE, 2000, and of course their new XP, XP Pro. If you look at all the OEMs that sell new computers, you will see that the choices for Operating Systems nowadays reflect that (ie. 98SE, 2000, XP).

My experience with ME? ... Give me all kind of problems when I moved from 98SE to ME (in 2 computers). The problem goes away after:

1. Reformat, and re-install 98SE, in 1 computer.
2. Reformat, and install 2000, in the other.

If ME is a better OS than 98SE, why does Microsoft take if off the shelves? IMHO, I think ME is just a "bastard" OS, that Microsoft use to "Beta Test" functionalities that will appear in XP.

i guess i'm probility the only one that actually likes ME, i'd been using it since the beginning and never had it crash or receive any type of error messages (that i can remember), but that's just me.

Switch to 2000 or XP. See if you go back to ME. I really doubt it....

you're probility right; but my computer only meets the minimum requirement and that might not be too good for it, and most of the software i'm using are for ME and might have a problem under XP.
