Where do you find the time to do all that work ?

To all people who write guides here and great forums contributors:

Where do you guys find the time to work so hard on this whole DVD encoding/authoring stuff (same question goes for the other forums, but I mostly visit these) ? Are your days longer than 24H or something ? DO you live in the 4th dimension ? Are you guys all students and single or something ? What is your secret ? DO you sometimes eat, sleep, ehm...watch movies ? (not to mention other natural activities that I wouldn't drop for any reason :D ) ?

I'm pretty impressed on the quantity and outstanding quality of guides that are published here, on a quite difficult subject, pretty well worded, highly understandable(well, most of the time :p ). Having written some user manuals in the past myself, I know haw difficult it is to word things in a non ambiguous way, so that it means exactly what you mean. The guides here ( particularly the latest ones) are really impressive and show a lot of "behind the scene" work. Hats off to you.


You know I hate to flatter people, but I must admit I'm more impressed than I ever was with any other site. This site is probably becoming the "number one " source of knowledge as far as DVD encoding and authoring are concerned.

WEll it seems that some people spend a lot of time here, a whole bunch of us are students i guess, and some are somehow related to the business. but this is for sure a hobby for most of us... like building wooden planes or collecting stamps.... or playing soccer. anyway my point is: almost every hobby somebody is into consumes a lot of time, but one does not care, since you like doing it, otherwise it wouldn't be your hobby.

i'm currently working on a translation of a guide from german to english and i can just reassure you, just translating a guide is a huge workload, but only a tiny one compared to creating it from scratch.

Judging from the number of registered board users and the post count (26,491 / 204,211), and considering 500 posts as the average for ppl spending half of their life here :P, there should be at least 400 fanatic ppl here (ok, lots of ppl might post one or two only, let it be 200 :)). Ah, how I miss the disabled members section now :o

I know I spend at least 5 hours per week (during down time at work :D) just reviewing information that was posted on the forums, yet still have a very low post count for various reasons. One of which is I am a firm believer in a modification to forum rule number 11: If you have nothing constructive to say on a certain matter then don't post. This alone will keep you from being involved in flame wars and from unintentionally breaking other forum rules.

Anyway, the point is, lamers like me that spend lots of time here but don't post much would probably raise the number of fanatic ppl to greater than 400, not lower it.

I only wish moderators could have 2 distinct post counts, or maybe even 3. The normal "what I post as a member" count, the "dude, behave yourself" count, and the answers to questions, most of which can be found via searching. My post count would be a lot lower if it only reflected the posts I made which were unrelated to moderating.

Everyone has a hobby. And certainly if you spend any time doing anything, something should come out of it no? Is it really so extrodinary that something would come out of a hobby or is it extrodinary that people would expend the effort to actually do things that they don't have to? The day needs to be filled with more than just things you are responsible for and gratifying oneself.

well it would definitely be nice to see how much time each member has spent on the board and not just how many posts one has written.
also the distinction between different kinds of posts, as mpucoder has mentioned it, would be great, though not possible to do. (: afaik of course!

I guess you misunderstood what I said. I'm not surprised people have a hobby, I spend a lot of time "hobbying" myself (ask my wife hw she likes it instead of helping for house work :D )

What I meant is these guys who write all this excellent stuff are like you and me fond of exploring DVD secrets and so on, but thsi doesn't necessary imply they would spend so much time writing papers just to help other people. They could as well spend their time only doing their research on complex DVD, increasing their own knowledge and keep it all for themselves. So to answer your question, YES, it IS extraodinary that they deliver such good material, when you know how long it takes to write guides and check 4 or 5 times that spelling is OK, that sentences are clear and so on. Plus, they have to be prepared to answer 10328 questions abuot their guide afterwards, no matter how clear it was.

One should beware not to "get used" to finding great guides or help here, as if if was "normal". And from your post, it almost looks like it is "normal". These guys provide a lot to the community and that's why I was so surprised and admirative, wondering where they find the tim and the energy to do the hard work on DVD AND then write detailed guides or help people out in the forums. What is "normal" is to devote your spare time to your passion. What is "impressive" is to make other people take advantage of what you learned and spare them most of the efforts you had to put in.
(Gee, mods, send me your signed checks right now, I'll fill in the numbers :D)

As for the sentences like " ar you guys students or single", this was clearly some kind of joke, I hope you could get that. :p
