how to make avi with dvd2avi

I opened the vob, hit save as avi using microsoft mpeg 4 codec, and I got a video file and an ac3 file. Do I now need to convert the ac3 file to another format? if so, what format and how.

That depends entirely on how you intend to use it.

BeSweet is a good proggie for changing audio format.

well, I want to burn it to dvd-r using dvd workshop. So I just need to convert the audio with besweet, encode the video to mpeg 2, and multiplex. Is that how it goes?

Ouch. Have you read any of Doom9's guides (http://www.doom9.org)?

In that case you DON'T save an AVI in DVD2AVI, you just make a project file in DVD2AVI, load that file in AVIsynth or vfapi, and then load that file in TMPEG.

And if you are doing DVD2DVD conversions then you do not need to touch the audio, the AC3 will do just fine.

Another recommendation is to get DVD2ONE (http://www.dvd2one.com) (single DVD-R rips) or DVDXCOPY (http://www.dvdxcopy.com) (double DVD-R rips). They will do the job nice without you needing to understand anything at all of the process.

Sorry, I guess I'm not making myself clear enough. What I am trying to do is keep some of the extras from a dvd (like deleted scenes) and burn the extras from about 5 dvd's onto one dvd, instead of sacrificing quality of the original movies by trying to fit the extras on the same disc.

I want to use Ulead Dvd Workshop to make menus for these extras, and so I just want to get the extras into avi format so that I can feed them into dvdws, then burn to dvd-r.

dvd2avi already made me a nice avi video, I really just to know how to put ac3 sound file together with that avi. Sorry for the confusion.
