IF you are going to do backups, might as well do them on something durable. See TDK's press release below for their new Armor DVD line.

The full line of TDK Armor Plated DVD discs will be available in the first quarter of 2003

Please contact them and request that they start offering the 9.4GB double-sided in this Armor type as well. Tell them about DVD backups and its need to use 2 DVDs for backup.

I personally like using double sided so I can use the same DVD box for my backups, but it is much easier to scratch because of both sides being exposed. So let TDK know you want 9.4GB option as well.

Wow that looks so cool. I will definitely buy some of these when they come out to store my home movies. I take lots of video of my 9 month old daughter and I want to make sure they last forever. I already put them on TDK 2X media...but this armor stuff is great :)

Below is my email to TDK, you can use the same email address and send your input as well.

In the meantime, I have found that www.rima.com offers the best quality double sided media (Ritek brand for $2.20 each). Or if you wish you could Armor plate your DVDs yourself using www.cdplayright.com Quick Shield product.

Feedback and suggestions about upcoming Armor recordable DVD media:

I saw your announcement about a new durable form of DVD-R called Armor Guard media from TDK. I and many others currently use recordable media to make DVD backups of our movie and TV DVD collections. However most current DVDs produced are dual layer and require that they are recorded on 2 DVD-Rs. However, most of us prefer to use double sided media so that the same size cases can be used.

I am asking that you offer your Armor guard DVD-R media as double sided as well so that these can be used by many of us doing backups.

Thanks, Jeff

I posted about this last year. The mentioned TDK DVD-R media are sold in Japan. They are not that expensive, a little over US$2 per unit, but still too expensive compared to most Taiwanese media.
