Good Sony DRU500 Review becuase they put in some time to discuss media which I find many reviews are lacking.

They say Pioneer(!) and a few others are going to make dual format (dvd+ and dvd-)? Any more info on this?
It's no solution to any standard 'wars', if everyone makes dual burners :) But I understand, no side will easily give up their position...most people will only use one kind of DVD (+ or -) anyway, won't they? So what?

One of the better articles. I tried the 500 external drive for my laptop about a month ago, and ended up taking it back. It was too unstable with Windows XP Pro, and wouldn't recognize Prassi. That was enough for me. It would be nice to be burning at 4x though!
I haven't seen a whole lot on the compatibilty war lately? How's +R holding up?

It's called peace of mind. People are reluctant to buy a DVD burner because they're afraid of chosing the wrong format. With a dual format drive like the DRU500, people feel better about buying a DVD burner and they will gladly pay premium for it too.

I also read that Samsung and LG would are considering making dual format drives if the demand is there. The Sony DRU500 is selling like hotcake so I'm surprise only NEC has followed suit so far.

Yeah, must be something like that...

Interesting...will this provide the peace of mind in the long run? You still have to decide on which media to use...I'd rather like to see one of the formats die, even if I'd have to buy a new burner for that...
I am not that much into all these dvd politics, but I never thought any dvdforum member (Pioneer) would make dvd+ burners...and now it's also Samsung and LG...
I start feeling uneasy about this...I might have chosen the wrong format (where is my peace of mind?)...but...if all is going dual, I can't be wrong with the one I have...but then...if all is dual, is one of the formats still gonna die? The longer I think about this, the more I think, I should buy a dual burner...just for the peace of mind... :D

In my view, the only decision to make regarding media is which brand to get and/or whether to use recordable or rewritable disc. Does it matter if you're using +R/+RW or -R/-RW? Not really since both have the same compatibility percentage. If you think about it, having both formats is an advantage. If +R/+RW is cheaper in your neck of the woods then use that; conversely, if -R/-RW is cheaper then use that instead.

That's a good argument, for sure...problem might be (mentioned in a thread here called 'previously unmentioned technical issues...' somewhere), that at the moment dvd-r is cheaper, but soon it might be dvd+r being cheaper...

LG Electronics announced it will produce DVD burners (model name GMA-4020B) that support DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM.

Unfortunately, there'd be another DVD-format war coming soon. It's the war between Blue-Ray and Blue-Laser. The source is here (http://www.hddvd.org/hddvd/formats/).

Please note that the name already partially fits to the standards of EU-English (http://www.effect.net.au/lukastan/humour/Language/EU-English.htm), there is no silent e in it: "Blu-Ray" :D

LOL... but still, nothing compared to french (suffixes such as -raient are not really necessary, are they? And typing "à côté de" is much more time consuming than "next to"...deliberating whether an expression is followed by indicatif or subjonctif does not save time either...)
BUT: Our (silly) government has changed some of the rules of german spelling as well (e.g. "ss" vs "ß", rules about triple-consonants (before : "Schiffahrt", now: "Schifffahrt", comma rules...), so this page may turn out more realistic than you might think :scared:
