Decrypting possible locked or scartched dvd?

My dad just bought a me a dvd from china and it won't play for some reason in my lite-on dvd drive. powerdvd tells me the the dvd might be scratched. i tried using smartripper and it says all files are readable except one that is locked. what do i do?

welcome to the forum :)

have you tried other rippers? i would suggest you try to use dvddecrypter. else, i don't think you'll have much chance to get it working, other than ripping (just hope the damaged file is not a .vob file) if it wasn't from china i'd suggest you just return it to the store...

anyway, this kind of questions are a little problematic since i suppose the DVD your father bought you isn't one hollywood is getting money for (:
to make it short, please do not talk about illegal content here since this could pose serious problems for both doom9 personally and also for the whole community.
(if it is an original, please disregard the above paragraph)

anyway i'd suggest you just rip the DVD to your hard drive to watch it, or try it in another player (soft and hardware!)

how is getting a dvd from china anymore illegal (or is it legal) than decrypting a dvd or getting a dvd from germany or japan; i also red the last part of what you said, but still.

the dvd's are not illegal in china so if you buy them there, it isn't illegal. i don't think there are any laws that say you can't import dvd's from foreign countries.

What is the point of arguing about legal or illegal here ? The guy just asked about a possibly scratched DVD, he didn't ask for any legal advice on whether he should or not throw his DVD in the garbage can. What is the point of asking questions like "So it's a Chinese movie? Which one is it, if I may ask ?". This sounds like trying to be smarter than average and surely won't help solving the problem (All apologies if it was not intended this way, but it sure sounds like this).

Back to the question, did you identify which file is reported as "locked" ? Did you try to rip in file mode with DVDDecrypter ? Did you try it in another DVD player (standalone for example) ?

Apology accepted. I have, as it is, an interest in Chinese movies. As I brought a couple of titles back home this summer (Chinese as well as Chinese DVD versions (Region 3) of Hollywood movies) I thought I might have been of assistance. Try to be a little bit less negative next time. :rolleyes:

But this thread really started to sound like asnjosh in front of the judges to me. I probably was too quick on this one and made a lot of noise for nothing (like too often unfortunately):rolleyes:

BTW, I also have some Chinese movies on DVD like "Zu", or recently "The Mission" (in another genre). But these are not original "chinese editions" :D
(Man I'm not even sure The Mission is chinese by the way :rolleyes: )
