averaging multiple captures for noise reduction

Who else is doing this besides me?

I've run into a couple problems:

problem 1:
successive broadcasts are shifted a field. fortunately this can be corrected with simple avisynth script.

problem 2:
successive broadcasts of the program are sometimes shifted up/down a scanline(!!) cartoon network has done this to me several times. i havent found a solution for this, and i'm not sure there is one :( (just shifting one of the captures up or down a scanline doesn't work, since the fields no longer align because they were interlaced differently)

BTW does anyone trade raw captures in order to assist with noisereduction?

Thus something like (in AviSynth):

clip0 = avisource("capture.avi")
clip1 = avisource("capture1.avi")
layer(clip0, clip1,"fast")

or with a denoiser:

clip0 = avisource("capture.avi")
clip1 = avisource("capture1.avi")
layer(clip0, clip1,"fast").Convolution3d(preset="animeLQ")

Of course you also have to deinterlace it properly.

I have some pretty much raw captures, but the quality is good already, so no need for de-noising.

If only people would have paid more attention to my 'SAMPLES' thread. Grr=)

thanks, i've looked at that thread long ago, and it doesn't discuss problem #2 nor does it discuss trading captures. i already know how to layer them, but compensating for image shifting is not discussed.

if they shift up/down, deinterlace each separately then use the x,y co-ordinates to layer, or give up!

course i have, read the doc for layer and how to reposition x,y co-ordinates for exactly this kind of problem

if you actually had tried it, you would see why your solution is not a solution at all...

Is it possible that your capture drivers are at fault? There are plenty of them out there, that swap field order at random! Did you try just swapping the fields of one of the captures?

i'm capturing DV via firewire. i am 100% certain it's not swapping fields.
