Color Correcting DV footage

Just wondering if anyone has done some extensive color correcting testing of miniDV footage? Does it entirely depend on the scene?

The reason why I ask is that many of the shots I've done seem to be kind of washed out sometimes. When I start messing with the saturation values in the computer it starts introducing color noise that's undesirable. Are there any ways to bring the color quality up more? Is it really worth doing color correcting?

Sorry I can't say much for low cost solutions, but Avid DV Xpress has very nice real time color correction (along with a lot of other great real time editing stuff)

Video Vegas 4.0 has some new color correction stuff in it. Thet have a full demo you can download (sonicfoundry)

The ColorYUV filter in AviSynth 2.5 has very detailed colorcorrecting capabilities - it just takes some time to get the parameters right, unless you're using a GUI.

Also blurring chroma could help your noise problems.

coloryuv(cont_u=256,cont_v=256)
mergechroma(blur(1.3).blur(1.3).blur(1.3))


Reduce cont_u/cont_v and perhaps decrease the amount or blurring to reflect your material.

Use off_u and off_v if you want your color shifted in a specific direction.
