How can i ADD my OWN SUBTITLE on a DVD ?

Hi, i want to copy a DVD to another one and add my own subtilte (which is .txt).

So i first need to transform the .txt subtitle in a .bmp format and then add it to the VOBs and then change the .IFO ... this is my guess, but i don't know how to do it and i tried to find a "how to", but nothing.

to add your own subtitles, you are most probably going to have to author it in.

Is there a guide about how to transform a .txt subtitle into a "???" format and then how to do that authoring thing with a personal subtitle ?
I only found guides about "extracting" and "removing" subtitles, but nothing about "transforming" into a recodnised format and then "adding" a new subtitle.

there is a proggie callewd maestrosbt which converts a srt subtitlefile to bmps to get imported in an authoring app

but i think you need to reauthor the whole dvd/movie if u want to add new subs

I have same problem.

I wrote text subtitles (under software players works fine) and now I'm looking for software or guide or FAQ, how to create DVD with my own subtitles.

I know, how to create BMPs with rendered subtitles (or pictures or someone else), but without timestamps.

I don't know terms (mastering, authoring, ???) and required procedures too.

there are some DVD authoring guides at http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdauthoring.htm
but they use some apps pretty expensive, so we must find them at some warez.

how u will obtain a $40000 piece of software as Maetro or Scenarist is none of our concern. U could very well be working for an authoring house and u could have one provided.

Pls avoid mention of warez and similar stuff.

However if u dont need one of the subs already in the DVD, u can replace it with yours, provided u have the bmps and the script with the timecodes in. Just follow one of the guides.

use sbtmaestro from the download section. u feed it with an ssa script, from Subrip and u have your subs in bmp format.

You mean without reauthoring the whole disk, I can replace one subtitle track by another? Would you mind pointing me to the right guide?

I want to add (or if it's easier I would chose replacing) my subs to a dvd, without changing anything else in it's structure. I have the subs ripped from another version of the dvd (they are english, my dvd only has German subtitles, so in case of replacing I would discard the German ones), they are already synced to the dvd, they are supposed to be added to. I can provide them in idx/sub (vobsub) or srt format...any hints for me?

Follow the CCE-ifoedit guide.

Produce the subs and insert them in your authoring program to the position of the one u don want any more.

Build the titleset and ifoupdate it. When u select the replaced sub u will read yours instead.

I hope it was clear enough, if not report back the point u dont understand.

Okay, well, I had to clear some problems, but finally I got Scenarist to create the dvd-files, I am just waiting for it...

First problem was some error about display area and pixel area of the subs...I had to fiddle around with the header of the .sst file generated by SubResync to fix that...what are the correct values for display area and pixel area in the header file? (PAL DVD, the bmps are 720x574)

Second problem was, I had to add 10:00:15;00 (10 hours, 15 secs) to the timecode of my subs with SubReSync, because the Scenarist track started at that timecode...anyone knows why? Should I (Can I?) edit it to start at 00:00:00;00 and do no time code correction, or is it okay, if it starts at 10:00:15;00?

I set the sub language in Scenarist to English, is that correct? (German was originally on the disc, english is the one I put in). Or does that setting have to be set to what was originally on the disc...is sub stream selected by ID or by that language setting?

Okay, I got so far, that I had the reauthored main movie playing with the new subs, but the ifoupdate procedure didn't work for me...I never got the subs to display in the final disc...I did it exactly as in the cce & ifoedit guide with ifoupdate 0.69.

I got it to work by switching on 'Copy audio and subpicture tables' (it's off in the guide). Maybe it's because I have selected english as subtitle language in the authoring process, while original disc has German?

I will redo this tomorrow from scratch...every info about the above things I mentioned being unclear is appreciated: display/pixel area error with original sst file from subresync and which values are correct and why, timecode 10:00:00:15 as start in Scenarist, set sub language in Scenarist to that of original disc or new subs, does it matter? -> is that the reason I had to check 'copy audio and subpicture tables' in ifoupdate or what might it have been?

I will have to sleep now, I'm really tired...thanx in advance for any help! ;)

Well, I did it again just like before...with the same quirks as before, except this time I chose German as subtitle language in Scenarist...it made no difference, I still had to chose 'Copy Audio and Subpicture tables' in IfoUpdate in addition to the settings described in the guide, but then it worked fine.

I later changed the subtitle language in the new ifo from german to english again and it still works...I think, I'll just leave it like it is...still interested in some details, about the above things...

That guide sounds nice, I followed it and end up with the .sst file and the bmps. So what I have to do next in scenarist? How can I replace one of the existing subs there? :confused:

This is gonna get me crazy. I tried to import the subtitle into Scenarist. At firts there was an error about dimension error, but I managed to solve it. But now I can't figure out how to solve the next problem. I'm getting this error "The timecode is overlapping".

You might answer saying "Try to fix your timecode". OK. I tried everything, but with no luck yet. I even tried to import one of the existing subs to see if it will work or not. first I used subrip and generated .srt file and then converted it to .ssa file and opened it in MaestroSBT and generated .sst file and then I tried to import this subtitle into scenarist, But I kept getting "The timecode is overlapping" error. So what possibly could be the problem. I'm so despreate :( . Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I tried the subdvd-mux and here is what I've encountered :

1) done (pretty forward actually)

2) done (exact situation that I have 3 subs and I want to add another one)

3)I ran the command as mentioned and I got this msg "warning, unable to parse line ..., skipping" for all subs lines

4) I have to finish step 3 to do this one ;)

any suggestions you have would be appreciated.

I was wondering which sub file you are refering to ... is it the one used to create the bitmaps in Maestrosbt (ssa) ... or the usuall sub file ... and which vob file should we apply submax-dvd to it ... let's say if you have 5 vobs which one do you apply submax-dvd to it ...

and did some adjustments ... like choosing "Windows BMP 8 bits" ... since submux-dvd can only process Windows BMP 8 bits and 4 bits ... and letting the output to be in .sub format instead of .sst ... The only thing that I would like to know ... what about the subtitles colors ... It seems that I'm getting wierd colors ... I tried ifoupdate ... it only corrected the original subtitles ... not the added one ... any suggestions :) ...

Subresync is part of vobsub. U can find it in the application's folder after installing

Can I ask a stupid question?

If I have some VobSubs downloaded, and I have a VIDEO_TS folder created from DVD Workshop (coz I like to use it for motion buttons etc), can I add vob subs to the video_ts folder before burning to dvd disc?

I used to use DVDMaestro for all my authoring, simply coz I required subs, but it takes an age to create a menu and chapter points etc.

So DVD Workshop is a great tool, but doesn't have a sub title option. :(

Can the methods above (SubMux) be used to add downloaded sub files like VobSubs to my video_ts folder before burning etc.

I wish I could find a full guid on this as I am sure it must be easy to do. Please tell me I don't need to author in another app! I really wanna stick with DVD Workshop for my layouts of the menu and chapters etc.

Basically I have the movie and audio files, menu pics and the whole thing is authored in workshop. I save the whole thing to a VIDEO_TS folder on the hard drive. This obviously contains all the vobs and required files to simply burn to disc, ready to play on any player.

I then find subtitles (mainly vobsub files) and would really like to add them to my dvd. Seems simple, but trying to find a guide is causing me a headache! This thread has been the closest I have found to my needs.

Can anyone help?
