Strange subtitles

I came accross a movie that has some very strange subtitles muxed in with the video. BSplayer, WMP9 and DivX player wont even play the file, WMP classic plays it just fine and it loads vobsub (something I've never seen when the subs are muxed in with the video).

It needs to be edited and I tried repacking with nandub, vdub and vdubmod with no luck. In nandub it crashed right away with the wrong nandub.dng error. In vdub and vdubmod with XviD and DivX5 two pass it errored out right away. I also tried the vobsubs vdub filter in all 3 programs, no luck :(.

Does anyone have any suggestions or know of a way to rip the subtitles out of the avi so I can edit?

You can rip the subtitles if u have the original dvd with subrip, and then convert the subrip file to a substation alpha file. With substation alpha u can then edit the subtitles. U can then add the subtitles to your video with virtualdub.
