Well, if the DVD burner's firmware has been modified to allow burning of 1x media at a greater speed (say 2x), you could do it. The 2x4all hacked firmware does just this for the Pioneer burner. But the problem is that many of the 1x media is ONLY usuable at 1x burn speeds. For example, I've tried Princos in the past - work marginal at 1x. Work like crap at 2x. (for me, I've seen others have success).

I think its a total waste of time. Why take risks with media that wasn't approved for 2x recording? You might get a hacked firmware, but it won't be optimized for that particular media brand. Its not simply a matter of entering the brand's manufacturing code in a table, they also list some details of how best to burn that brand at higher speeds.
The new 4X standard has that table built in to each disk so you won't need firmware updates for them.
If you really care for speed, just get a 4X burner and start buying Ritek 4X media.

Well, in the case of Ritek G3's, the hacked firmware has been a godsend. I've burned a boatload at 2x now, and not had a problem (nor anyone I've given discs to). Without the hack, using the official Pioneer A03 firmware, I could only be burning them at 1x speed. The heck with that!
Whenever you exceed the supported parameters (of anything), you do so at your own risk. Having said that, I'll continue to burn them at 2x.

I also burn Riteks in my A04 at 2x using a Hacked firmware. My first test turned out badly, but since then its been working great. G03s raised in price recently but they are still more then worth the money... bless those little purple platters.

I've used the Bulkpaq 3-2 (purple) discs at double speed and found that about 1 in 3 or 4 will only play on a PC. If I'm short of time I take the risk but usually rely on 1x recording.
