I've looked around here but still can't find the answer
so please forgive me if it's an age old question.

I have d/l an Avi and would like to know what codec was used
to encode it. This, I hope will allow me to find the right codec
to play the file. I think I have most of the standard ones.
But is there a way to check the codec of the Avi? The file
currently plays but with one frame comming through the
other... kind of a ghost effect and with a greenish tint comming in and out.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forums-

One thing, though, and that is we don't discuss downloaded movies. Please familiarize yourself with the Forum Rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm).

But if you point GSpot (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Editing/gspot21.zip) at it, it'll tell you what codec it's been encoded with, and if you're missing something to play it. But ffdshow (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Filters/ffdshow-20021213.exe) can play about anything.

Manono, Thank you for your help!

I apologize for neglecting the rules.
I appreciate that you were nice about it!! I will strive to do better.

Gspot work great. It said the file was in Xvid. Windows told me it was aready installed though? And I remember installing it
off it's official site.

Is there a difference in versions of Xvid?

The good news. Once ffdshow was installed the file played beautifully!! Thanks a million!

Hi-

Is there a difference in versions of Xvid?

Yes. The newer versions allow the use of B-Frames and all kinds of fancy stuff, and the older decoders won't be able to handle it.

Thanks a million!

You're welcome!

Would you help leading the blind some more?

Win 2K

Ok, I can now play the .avi great thanx to your help
with ffdshow. However, I'm trying to convert the
file to SVCD by opening the file in Virtual Dub (it
complains about audio vbs)

Video.. direct stream

Audio.. Full processing, Avi audio, no compression
tryied both 48000(default) and 47000, high quality checked

Save as AVI

Open DVD2SVCD, change Misc tab to .AVI (file input)
I am using TMPGEnc to encode
Point to newly created AVI and go to convert tab and convert

.Mpg... video is good! Audio is way out of sync!

I've tried saving audio as a .wav in Virtual Dub and then doing
the same... same result!

Any help?... please remember that I'm a Newbie :) and I aspire to
be as knowlegdeable as you guys! I am clay in your hands...
Ok, maybe a little too deep -- but you get the point.

Thanks in advance... I hope

Hi-

First, don't open it in VDub. It doesn't support VBR audio. Use either Nandub or VDubMod. Second, you don't need to do anything with the audio anyway, because AVI2SVCD does it for you. Did you see Doom9's AVI2SVCD Guide (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2svcd-avi.htm)?

If you don't want to go through the whole process again, then extract the audio with Nandub (set Video to Direct Stream Copy and then File-Save WAV and rename it when done to .mp3 (if that's what it was originally)). Then use BeSweet or HeadAC3he to convert it to .mp2 and rename it to the AVI2SVCD name (What? Extracted_audio_1.mp2 or something like that-I don't have one handy to check.) Then you should be able to use the Recover Console in the Misc. Tab to pick it up with the bbmpeg-muxing step.

Let us know if you have any more problems.

This is so I don't get labeled wrong.

From my previous posts one might think I am being lazy.
Truth be told, I have done seaches and read many guides
and sometimes just miss the one that is best suited for
my needs. I will usually do a lot of searching before
posting a question. I have read some post here that really
slap some people on the wrist. I have been fortunate enought
to not be one of those slaps :) and hope to never be.
The first problem I had was solved for me with one post
despite the fact that I searched for the answer for Four days
(before posting)

Anyway... I will try the AVI2SVCD guide found here and let you
know about the progress. This will be the 4th guide tried, however,
I'm alreadly very confident that this one will
work considering the source ... umm.. umm.. Manono :)

Hey-

I'm already very confident that this one will work

I wouldn't be too confident if I were you. Do you remember how you felt when you found out there was no Santa Claus? If you don't have any expectations, then you won't get disappointed. :) Besides, anything can happen when you're converting VBR MP3. And mods aren't infallible.
