Can one or two VOB files be reduced

I have run into a problem with some movies that after stripping everthing out and have movie only VOB`S the size is still to large. The files are about 4.8 gig and nothing more can be removed.
I have tried rempeg 1.52 but get shaking screens (something about interlaced intro).
I would like to use rempeg on one or two vobs to reduce size.

Can this be done so that when they are put back together it will work.

I just want to use rempeg since it is so easy to use
I have searched everywhere for a guide.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Carthoris.

Yes there is a way. I had to do this with a few titles myself.

Tools Needed:

Rempeg2
VobEdit
IfoEdit

Load the last VOB file of your title set into Rempeg.
Set the nescessary settings that you need and Run it.

After Rempeg has built your .m2v file,
load up VobEdit and Click the 'Open' button and load in the Original VOB file that Rempeg worked from.

Then Click the 'Edit' menu option and choose 'Remux m2v' and load in the .m2v file that Rempeg built.
Save the output to a different folder.

This procedure will remux the audio with your new encoded video back together again.

When VobEdit is done, you will have a new .VOB file. You will need to re-name it to the original title-set VOB.
Then Move the Original VOB to a new safe folder (incase of any errors we can get back to it) then move your NEWLY created VOB into the folder where your Original VOB was.

Now load up IfoEdit and load in the IFO file that belongs to the title-set you are working with.
Click "Vob Extras" Click Strip Streams and Strip Vob Id's Correct Original Ifo's, Correct Vob Unit Pointers. Then choose a Folder where the New VOB files will be created. (We are not really going to strip any ID's or Steams here, since you already have done that and any streams that are there you want to keep.) So check all to keep them.

IfoEdit will rebuilt all the VOB files again with all the right information needed to re-build that VOB back into the title-set.

I really appreciate your help.
Rempeg is so easy to use and in my opinion the results are excellent.
It would work on all DVD`s If you could leave the first VOB file alone and just use rempeg on all the rest.
Do you think that is possible.

Yes, you can! I had to do it with my "Collateral Damage" DVD. Even after stripping all I could it still was too big to fit. So I just used that same procedure and transcoded the last 2 VOBS of the movie and I got it down to 4.0 GIG, complete with the Scene Selection Menu.
You can easily do this with any movie. I have used this method about 3 times and had NO problems.
It does work! :D

HI Kirby,

When you compressed 2 VOB`s do you do them one at a time or together in one m2v file?

I tried to use this method on Reign of fire and the new vob file shakes and studders. I tried each vob individually excluding the first on. The m2v file created was fine. I cant`t figure this one out unless my ifo files are not correct in some way. I don`t have the orginal DVD to try it again.

Hi.

I do this with each VOB file separately. I had no trouble with my VOB's that you are having. I have heard that Rempeg does have trouble with some titles, but I have not encountered these problems as of yet. I want to move away from Rempeg myself and try using DVD2One when the next version becomes available. Rempeg is good for what is does (a bit slow though), but I have had pretty good success with it so far. I will see if I can find an answer to your question about the jerkyness of the movie. I am sure the answer is hidden in these forums somewhere.

I found the problem and it`s the ifo files.
I rempeg the vob and reconstruct it. then I tested the vob and its jerky. I stopped here.
Big mistake.

When you reconstruct the titleset and create new ifo`s the problem is gone and playback is fine.

I'm Glad you found what the trouble was. Just follow the little guide I made for you, and hopefully you will not have anymore problems. I always use IfoEdit to re-construct the VOBS after using Rempeg. It seems IfoEdit corrects many inconsistancies with the VOB's and IFO's after doing the encoding from Rempeg.

I have tried the Demo Version of Dvd2One and I like what it does. but I really like my Chapter Menu's, so I will wait on the product to see what it's future holds for Menu's. I have read the forums about 'MakeItEasy' so you can save more space for menus, but I do not own a full version of Dvd2One to be able to utilize all the functionality of these 2 products.

HI Kirby,

I have tried DVD2ONE and its a dream come true.
Their were four DVD`s I have had problems backing up using Rempeg due to problems with interlacing. West Side Story, Reign of Fire, True Lies, and Star Wars episode 2.
IN less than one hour since I still had them on my HD I was able to compress them all. This program has all 4 ready to burn. I am burnning one now to make sure it works on my Sony DVD player without any problems. The resolution look as good as if not better than Rempeg. Rempeg took 9 hrs for West side story. This program took 17 mi.

I am thinking of getting the new version so I can keep Menu's.

I tried the demo and liked the way you can specify the space to use.

I just bought Dvd2One Version 1.01, and I am re-doing my 'Collateral Damage' DVD right now. I want to see the difference with the one I did with Rempeg when I re-transcoded the last 2 VOB's with it.

I will post my results to you when I have finished it.
If this works, then I will have enough room for the Chapter Menu.

question, but, have you tried using BeSweet to create audio 5.1 Music CD-R's??

I tried but all mine came out with just noise.
I followed all the guides for it, but FAILED on every attempt.

It WORKS FANTASTIC!

My movie was just over 6 GIG, so I set the output size to 4200 MEGS.
DVD2One 1.01 gave me a final movie size of 4.0 GIG. I removed all extra languages and subs. When Dvd2One was done, I copied my menu over and IfoUpdated and have a final size of 4.1 GIG. Video quality is still excellent to my eyes. No more Rempeg for me. Full time was just 35 minutes for transcoding by Dvd2One. Now, if I just had a burner, I'd be in my glory! I have been storing movies on my Hard Drive and I am nearing the capacity of it :(

I am Thinking of buying the Sony DRU 500a burner. Which burner are you currently using?

Hi Kirby,

I still use infoedit to shrink everything to movie only then use dvd2one. The 4 DVD`s I mentioned worked well. I still can`t believe it. I was using rempeg on Amadeus time= 9 hr. while rempeg was still running I ran dvd2one time for the same operation 17 mi. I can not see any difference in quality of image.

I have a pioneer DVR A04 and am quite happy with it. 120 straight burns and still counting. The sony does + and - DVD`s. Im not really sure that matters since most DVD players now do DVD-R and -RW.

I have not done any music CD`s for quit some time so I have no experience with BeSweet.

What forum should we be using. Let me know.

What brand of media do you find that works well with your burner?

Yes, the quality is much better with Dvd2one than Rempeg. Since now I bought the 1.0.1 version of Dvd2One I can't think of using Rempeg, but it was a great straight forward tool for me to use before Dvd2One came along. But I will still keep Rempeg handy just incase I need it for something special.

I think DVD2ONE will get its own forum soon.
It`s a revolutionary product.

I use beall DVD`s from Samsung at $1.44 each in quantity. I know they are expensive but they all work in any DVD player without problems.
I tried other media and had all kind`s of problems especially when the media approached capicity. Also video dropout and pixilation. Also sucessfull burn but failed verification with nero.

the Samsung is 2x with most burners but 1x with pioneer.

I have not been able to get a new S/N from DVD2ONE to unlock my version 1.01. Their`s a problem with my e-mail address I used to register the initial purchase. That really sucks. I don`t know how long it will take to get this resolved.

I hope it gets fixed soon for you. there is already a new update out right now, Version 1.0.2 of Dvd2One that fixes the Reg input which some emailers mess up when receiving your new reg code.

Do you think the problem with your email address is due to Dvd2Ones database, or your Internet Provider??

It`s my internet provider as usual since this happened before. Last time this happened it took 2 weeks. It`s my hotmail account that I used. They really take their time to fix the problem since my msn account is ok.

I had no problem with the initial reg. I just cut and pasted it
hopefully I`ll have no problem with version 1.0

Hi Carthrois

Have you tried the new 'MenuEdit' program? It works great for me. Very easy to use.

Just load up your menu VOB for the title set you are working on, and select the VOB ID that menu is in and click on a button on the menu you want to disable. Works great for me so far.

The actual picture of the menu does not show, but the button placement is there. You just have to know which menu and buttons that are in the order of the screen.

You are correct.

How can this small program do it. It`s faster than using ifoedit to creat movie only ifo`s. When I first used it on a 7 Gig movie and It said 19 mi I wondered what the trick would be. Would a gag screen appear, what would the program do. Nothing special happened so I checked the directory and there it was. I was just shocked. All the hrs spent with infoedit Rempeg CCE vobspliters, chapter creation.

Wait till the word get out. DVDXcopy made PCworld mag.

Lets just sit back and enjoy.

I`m just doing movie only for now and I don`t really see that changing. A dvd with an alternate ending may be the only thing I would try.
