divx in dvd format

Hi to all of you there.SO i have a question for you.I have many manga titles in divx.All i wanna do is fit them on a dvd with a menu which i'll make by myself so to be able to play it with my dvd player.The problem is that i don't know how to make the avi files to mpeg 2(dvd compilant) without to increase their size.I've tried and encoded some episodes (340mb each) with a result of 1.5gb each.In all the programs i used i changed the resolution bitrate audio with the same values as the divx .Does anyone knows with wich problem and what values do i need to use to have an mpeg2 file with the same size as the original (divx)

hm, DivX is so great, BECAUSE it has smaler file size than mpg.
A 350 MB mpg wouldn have really good quality I think

Thank you for your notice but you didn't really answer my question.Does anyone knows which program and what values do i have to make so to have an mpeg 2 file with equal size of the divx?

He did answer you question, but the question is such a stupid one that maybe he didnt answer it clearly enough?

DivX uses VERY GOOD avi compression when compared to MPEG (DVD). On average an AVI is 7-10mb per minute compared to DVD 20-40mb per minute. This is to do with a lot of things such as the resolution of a DVD (720x480 pal?).

Using the same setting as the DivX equivalent it will be the case that the files will be huge because mpegs in general arent so megabyte friendly.

My best advice is to follow the cce tutorial on this webpage and use a bitrate calculator to get a length/size your happy with.

if you work out the bitrate of the DIVX, you encode to mpeg-2 with that bitrate, but it will look like crap.

Thank you for your consern craigweb2k. My question wasn't stupid.It's not that i don;t know about encoding, I have made many movies in divx xvid and mpeg 1 format.As i said earlier the type of movies i want to encode are some manga titles not very good (graphically and plot) which i want to have all the episodes in one Dvd.So when the manga title has 13 episodes, i want to find the appropriate settings so the final size do not extend the 4.3 Gb of a Dvd.

It is often overlooked that besides the obvious dvd resolutions of 720x480 (ntsc) and 720x576 (pal) also 352x480 and 352x576 - and even 352x240 and 352x288 are dvd compliant.
This way you can lower the bitrate much more and still sustain reasonable low artefact level (of course video will not be that sharp anymore). This is recommended mostly if the source material quality is not that high (no high resolution, so blowing resolution up won't doo good).
Hey, are you talking about lain (serial experiments) by any chance - it has also 13 episodes? I encoded them many months ago to ~175mb avi's (there's my signature on them) but also started to do them as svcd but got tired of it.
If you encode them to 352x480 resolution mpeg2's you'll be able to do them in good quality at ~350mb (cause i did them with 480x480 (svcd) at that size (one episode just about 22 minutes though) and qualiy's quite good.
I believe with that you can do them to dvd.
If you need more detail on how, I can give some more ideas, but I did not encode 352x?? for dvd yet, just started with dvd authoring recently.

Thank you for your interest Hironimo.I know about these resolutions but i was wondering if i could be able to keep the ones the episode have (512x384).Maybe i can't.As for the series i want to encode are jubei chan,cool devices,la blue girl etc.I don't think that serial experiments is crap (as i tld i want to encode just the manga series that i don't care a lot).I have seriel experiments on Dvd.Anyway i'll try to think of a way to fit them on the Dvd or else i will just throw them as they are (divx form).As i heard soon it will be ready for public release a dvd player that can handle divx files.Although i'll try to encode in 512x384 with as many programs as i can and tell you the results.Thanks again.

The DVD spec is there for a reason. If you ignore the spec and use your own framesizes which do not conform to the spec, then any DVDs you manage to author will probably have major playback problems on the majority of standalones. As auenf said, you are going to get appallingly bad results, unfortunately.

I have to agree with Arky. If you produce off-standard dvd's it is likely they will not play.
However, you can at least try. Encode the first ep in the way you think of, burn it on a dvd-rw and try if it plays. If it's ok with your dvd and you do not intend to play it anywhere else then go ahead. If you sometime get a new player it might not work then though.

And in case you might be interested, there already is already a dvd standalone that plays divx. I heared it's not good though.

To serial experiments - i did not mean it was crap ( was just mentioning that you did not think that highly of what you were going to encode). I think it's quite a good series, even. But its very dark, and you have to be in the mood for it. In my current not-dark mood it would just mess my mind up and probably make me depressive ^-^.

And hey. Why be so stubborn and put so much effort into encoding eps that you don't care so much about anyway. What about just burning the avis plain on dvd and be ok with seing them on PC? (normally one assumes that one puts more effort in the videos you do care about, not the ones you don't)

Thanks once again for your interest Arky and Hironimo.Well both of you have a point.But it's just a try.As you probably already know tries made the evolution to many things.Someone has to waste his time for one subject insted of many.Anyway

As for getting in so much trouble for encoding something that i don't really like, it's just the procedure that matters to me and the efford needed to make something of your own.

Many friends of mine keep divx files of every movie they can get.Each one of them probably have up to 200 movies.But whats the point when you don't really watch them and just keep them?But what can you say.Although the good thing is that they have tried so many programs (including me) that we help each other with our experience about the programs we use to produce better quality less time etc.
