View Full Version : Converting DV audio 32khz to 48khz

I am borrowing a miniDV camera since mine broke, and this one I'm borrowing only has 32khz audio 12bit. I noticed AC3 files need to be 48khz, (or maybe they can be 44khz, haven't tried 44). So other than loading the AVI file into adobe premiere and exporting to a WAV file at 48khz, is there some other quicker way I can do this?? i dont' like adobe premiere, its too clunky and uses up too much ram

Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge can do sample rate conversion. Does it better than Premiere, too. ;)

Use SSRC (available at Doom9's downloads). Best conversion and free.
And see if you can't at least use 16Bit audio (most camcorders support that).

Its definitely only supporting 12bit audio :( its one of the first generation of miniDV cameras.
I'm going to try to get mine fixed...we'll see

I almost forgot to mention: You may use our swiss army knife BeSweet, too, as it has SSRC included.

AFAIK, in DV 16bit is always @ 48K and 12bit is 32K. My Sony D8 has both settings like most of "recent" DV (or D8) cameras.

Sorry, but that's wrong. The sample precision (16 or 12 Bits) has nothing to do with the sample rate (48 kHz or 32 kHz). E.g. my Canon MV-3 supports 32 kHz audio at 12 or 16 Bits precision.

I know that it has nothing to do (sample precision and sample rate), but I thought DV standard only had those two options (12b@32K and 16b@48K - making settings for "OK" quality and "GOOD" quality). Perhaps only Sony uses those two settings.
Initially I used 12 bit precison since audio quality from the internal mics is not too high, but then I started to use 16bit because of the sample rate (no need to re-sample for DVD, and higher quality from the begining)
Does anyone know if the total data rate is different or using higher sample rate will leave less bandwith for video?

I think you can choose one 16bit 48 kHz audio track or two 12bit 32 kHz tracks. At least that's how it has been in every camera I have used. They also have the same bitrate:
16*48000*2 = 16*32000*2*2
I think the default setting is usually the 12/32 track. The other track can be recorded afterwards. The quality difference is probably quite small because the microphones in the camera are usually bad and the tape recorder makes a lot of background noise.

Sony is very impressive removing background (tape) noise. For those who use an external mic, 16bit could lead to better results.

I know this is an old post but thought I'd reply anyway. The manual to my Sony talks about the audio and says that the same amount of space is reserved for the audio regardless of the setting you choose. The same amount of bandwidth is always available for the video since the part for audio is always reserved anyway.
As for the rest of the discussion, I am curious also. It seems that audio and video is always captured as one AVI file (in DV format?). Is there any way to capture from the camcorder and have the capture go to a video-only AVI file and have the audio written as a WAV file? This whole "splitting up" afterwards seems like a huge waste of time to me. Analog work I've done in the past captured to a WAV file with a video only file. Made DVD work a LOT easier. I would think this would be a simple thing to do digitally but I've not seen any information saying this is possible. Is it?

I don't know a single DV capture program which could do that (what a pity).

You can convert the DV AVI's audio using the latest BeSweet 1.5 betas directly from the AVI file, provided that it's type-2 (no type-1 support, unfortunately).

I have a Pinnacle DC1000 analog capture card that integrates with Adobe Premiere. When you do a capture, it captures audio and video at the same time but writes audio as a separate WAV file which can then be encoded to AC3 if you like. You can do what you want with the video separately. It's always perfectly in sync too. I've always been very happy with the card but now it's time to upgrade. :)
As for the audio, I seem to be ok. The recordings I made were in 16bit audio. Once I had the AVI imported to Premiere and did my work, I was able to export the audio separately as 48kHz 16bit WAV. I exported the video by itself and did the MPEG encoding. It works ok. As you said though, it's a pity that digital capture is not able to capture this way to begin with like the DC1000 card I have. Oh well. The export goes fairly quickly so it's a minor inconvenience.

The Matrox cards (RT2500, RT.X10, RT.X100) all do this as well. Captured video is in an .avi file, and the captured audio is written to .wav.
For standard DV capture through an OHCI-compliant 1394 card, all capture programs I know of capture as either a type 1 or 2 DV .avi file, where audio is embedded in the .avi.

Just to make it all clearer for future post readers: yes, same amonut of space is reserved for audio regardless it is 12bit/32kHz or 16bit/48kHz - audio/video frame size is constant. However, 12bit/32kHz has one advantage - it can fit 4 channels into one frame. 16bit/48kHz can fit only 2 channels (stereo). So, if you don't plan to record 4 channels, you shouldn't use 12bit/32kHz.
