Compressibility Check with Xvid

Hi,

Is it useful to do a Compressibility Check to choose the Resolution, encoding with Xvid?

If yes, can I do it with GordianKnot using DivX3 Compressibility Check or is there a way to do it with Xvid?

It could be usefull to do a compressibility test, but not only for the resolution.

To be sure that your whole configuration ( Desired Size, resolution, filters, codec settings ) is ok for the movie you are going to encode.

But you cannot use an other codec to make the test ;). Even if you choose some settings with the same codec, you've got sometimes totally differents results.


Maybe you should use DVX 3. He is making Comp-test for XviD & DivX 5.0.3 : http://www.planetdvb.net/dvx/
( you can use VirtualDubMod 1.4.13.1, Avisynth 2.5, BeSweet 1.5b14, etc.. Very powerfull tool. It's the best tool "ala gordian knot" that I have ever see ).

I suppose it's a matter of taste.
But installing .net just for doing a Compressibility Check...:confused:

By the way, it's possible to use Gknot for doing this (there is a thread on this forum) as long as you don't use B-Frames (results are not accurate with B-frames and i think it's the same pb with DVX)

Coming back to .NET, i don't have space problems on my PC and i got an ADSL connexion, so no advantage for me installing .NET

And at least my computer is not going slower because of this "NET framework elephant-like "

anybody tried QuickAVS?
it can do very customized compressibility check for xvid. although the program is not as complete as dolemite's

DVX is really a great tool. And downloading 20Mo for using it is really a little price to pay ;)

But it's a matter of taste, of course.

Gordian Knot is a great tool too. I used it for a long time. But it's not a perfect tool ( anymore.. maybe it will be again with version 0.28.. ).

But DVX 3 IS a "nearly perfect" tool ;). ( DVX 3.. not DVX 2.x ).


And about the .NET framework, in 1-3 years you won't even think about it, beccause it will be included in Windows. If I remeber well, it's already included in "longhorn" ( but I'm not sure ).

Finnaly I would say that my computer does not function less better ,nor better since I installed .NET ;).

I'me sure that 80% of "Gordian-knot-like" users or "all by hand" users , who will test DVX 3 will use it for a long time.

I don't think that installing some runtime will slow down your computer... afaik nothing is loaded into memory when you're not using .net programs.

To go back on topic, it is of cours maybe not worth downloading it just to make a comp test but you have to think about all these new (great) tools that are also using .net (ReDVD for example in doom9's today's news). BTW if as you said you have an ADSL connexion it's worth trying it and it's worth trying DVX for the XviD comp test and for all it's other unique features !

If you keep on using Windows and don't run away to Linux you'll have to install .Net (along with the daily hundred security fix and service packs) one day or another because, as seewen said, next microsoft products will certainly use it. It seems to me that ms made for one time some nice job with .net.

Well, maybe i'm wrong but as long i have the choice i will not Install .net runtime; i'm allways sceptical on this.

And i think i'm not alone :)
