In What codec to encode animated films(series)?

Hi,
I'm trying to encode animated serie Futurama na Simpsons to some format.
I have grabbed them from TV in high quality, but i dont know what codec or filter to use.
Normal films i also encode to divx5, but animated serie has big areas of the same colour and on the crossing to another colour it does really unsightly squares, that i dont like.
i want to use some codec or filter, that will compress the source mpeg to avi file, but with little loose of quality.

I hope anyone has experience in animated films encoding.

RV9 (real video) is great for animation, but I hear you can get similar results with Xvid if you do some tweaking.

i know about Xvid - it is the "same" codec, but i wanted to know some settings that best for animated movies.

This has been discussed in a very great amount of detail (ie 200 + posts) use the search button and search for ANIME (similiar settings would be used)

As for me and codecs it depends on what u are looking for. I used to do all my anime in Divx3 but now do it in Divx 5 dont really like RP9 personally but that does not mean its bad its up to u and what kinda of size files u want etc.

The main thing with all formats is filters and deinterlacing read widely about it there are loads of filters available for virtualdub that can clean up anime/cartoon material which has been captured of tv etc. and often they make a massive difference , these are not mostly provided with virtual dub. so u need to download em

Otherwise my best advice is experiment dont just encode straight from the capture unless u got a damn good source or u dont care about it that much. As for XVID well it is damn good but i personally find it much harder to use but it is good , RV9 is also brilliant for small files high quality but i know a lot of people hate realplayer. again up to u.

What id do is try encoding the same episode several times in different formats ie DIVX3/5/XVID/RV9 with different filters and see what settings etc u like best

I have been pulling futurama episodes down lately at 640x480. I am not so concerned with file size on them as I am with quality. After a bit of IVTC and filtering out noise I have been encoding them with Xvid quality based 1-pass at 90% and I hit about 230Mb every time. I generally like to do 2-pass. But since I have to be ready for a new episode almost every night speed is an issue. Actually If I were dooing 2-pass I would aim for about 350Mb per episode. ;)

RV9 is good. But I like to have the possibility for re-encode and editing later.
