I've read yoru guide, and it says you need to have ASPI installed to successfully rip DVD vob's with DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper. I ran the checker, no ASPI installed, and all my DVD's rip like peaches.
is the guide misleading?
just a question....

You would need it for Smartripper all the time, but not for DVD Decrypter on a Win2k / XP machine.
The authentication process requires the ASPI dll to allow direct access to the drive. Normally guides also quote to play the disc in your dvd player software for a few minutes before ripping.
The time you play for is irrelevant. So long as you have a working aspi layer, the rippers should be able to authenticate the device without any need for the dvd player to be started.
Smartrippers code is a little flakey, so the dvd player is still required on occasions.
