I have read in a few forums, people suggesting burning from a image.
Can anybody explain why its more desirable to burn from a image.

Some applications do 'validation' if you just drag, drop and burn the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders. For example, Prassi by default checks the compliance of the folders if it sees them being burned. Sometimes it errors out (for invalid reasons).

If you burn an image, you don't have to deal with that.

Besides that if you use a program to create the image that is known to make compliant DVD images then you don't need to worry as much that the burning program can do it correctly.

Nero is a prime example. At least with 5.5.10.0 the DVD template was not completely correct. So if you used it some DVD players would not play it, but if you used a good image creation program and burned the image instead of using the template it worked fine.

Also you bypass any changes that the burning program wants to make to the files if it thinks they should be different.

Personally I don't make an image, but use RecordNow Max which is as good as any burning program I have seen for DVD's. If I could I would try Prassi Primo DVD, but my DVD recorder is not supported.

Additionally it should help prevent errors caused by bad IDE bus drivers interacting with the DVD writting app. It will also ensure your files are put in the correct order.

I use Prassi Primo DVD to burn to DVD-R and dont have any problems with the actual burn process. So to sum up; there would be absolutely no advantage for me in using a image to burn.
I have just started using IMGtools to make an image.

i got a wierd problem, when i use imgtools to make an img, i can't play the img in powerdvd
i'll explain, the whole VIDEO_TS file on my hd seems ok, plays fine in ifoedit and in powerdvd, but as soon as i make the img, and mount it with deamon tools to test, the ifo's are all corrupt, i can't open any ifo in ifoedit, and when i open the ifo in hex mode, i see that the headers are all messed up, so no dvd player (powerdvd, windvd, ifoedit) will play the mounted dvd-r...

what's going on?
i tried copying the VIDEO_TS folder to different hard disks to remake the img, but always same problem.

I just had the exact same problem as you a couple of days ago, and what I did was, I downloaded the imagetool89 from coujo.de site and installed it again to a new 8 character directory(using xp), then added ifoedit to new directory and it worked! I guess my imagetool files got corrupted for some reason.... just delete old imagetool files in your hard drive and download new files from web and try it again... at least this is how I fixed my problem, and then again, you may have a different problem....who knows...:D
