Crash using Partition Magic 7 on XP NTFS

I just wanted to get some free space to have a second Fat32 partition on my winXP primary disk composed of a single 20GB NTFS partition.
I proceeded in a hurry forgetting to launch a chkdsk in WinXP.

I used a rescue disquette (with Win98 Dos)and knowing the limitation of old Powerquest PM products, I used the latest Partition Magic 7 I had (dated 28/04/2001). (I succeeded once before with v.7). I selected the partition table and defined a new size of 15GB, well 2GB above the space occupancy. Then I executed to command, with first an integrity check, finished without error, then moving sectors, with bargraph counters blocked for a long time on 64%, 68%, and 72% and suddenty I got Error 1513: Bad attribute position in file record.
No other possibility than to reboot !
I have lost my c: drive. It is not possible to reboot winXP. Partinfo says I still have the original partition size. Drive image says it is a 19124.2MB Active NTFS partition with a strange label ????????z????hH?k???????

I was stuck in the middle of the move and the data seem to be definitively lost. Is there still a hope? Does anyone have a solution for me ?

With WinXP I use PM 8.0. It works much better than 7.0 on NTFS. I used it to solve a problem I had with 7.0. You could try the trial download and see if it fixes you up

if worse comes to worse , you can always use a program like dirsnoop which will recover lost data even if it has been permanently deleted. re partitioning will still have the data there , just no pointer to the data . last i checked dir snoop doesn't support NTFS but i'm sure you will find another program out there . let me know how it goes. Fingers crossed that you don't have to use this method as its not 100% recoverable and can leave you with very corrupt avi file etc . lets hope PM 8 will fix it .

Back to my problem, It is solved ! I had several useful answers also on another site : http://www.commentcamarche.com/forum/affich.php3?cat=1&ID=212472&page=1 and as you will see, we have collected there linnks to a series of useful programs: File recovery, Disk rescue, Easyrecovery, GetDataBack, Powerquest Lost+found, Norton Disk doctor...
I placed the disk into a second PC running Windows XP needed to access the NTFS data. I accessed the physical disk with GetDataBack and saved the disk content, file by file twice based on both FAT tables still present but very different inaspect (due to the way partition magic worked to move and shorten the partition size)).
I finally decided to let WinXP repair the lost partition and it worked ! Thank you Bill, but it's only one success for nine previous complete failures with Microsoft scandisk and chkdsk.
