Determine quality?

Greetings.

I have come across a quite silly problem actually.. I downloaded two different copies of great (did I say, great?) movie - Fire Walk With Me. Now, those are really different - version #1 is 640x368, 25fps (DIV3) with AC3 audio, file sizes are 720+719 mb. Version #2 is 720x352, 29.97fps (DX50), mpeg layer 3 audio, file sizes 605+603mb.

Now the problem is... they look just as good to me! Yup, they are different, but I can no way say which one is better! And I dont want to make a mistake, since it took AGES to get those!

So, any ideas how to make the final choice? (no, i'm not willing to burn both;p)

anyway, I'd go for the first one, since it has an AC3 audio, more or less "good" choosen resolution and encoded with DivX 3.11
But how do you want to burn 720 MBs ? onto 99 min blank maybe ?

well actually its 720000kb :) so it kinda fits :)

I would definitely go for the first one for a very simple reason: the second one is encoded non properly in 29,97fps instead of 23,976fps, so playback is jerky all the time, especially on pan scenes.

The first one has 25fps, PAL speed-up source, so motion is very smooth. Go for that one!

i think this forum is more for people who backup dvds they own, not movies being downloaded off the net. i think thats illegal and talking about such things on doom9s forum could mean bad things for him.

I think its okay to download movies that you already own. and QQ didn't say any differently... I guess it is up to the discretion of doom9 (and/or the moderators)...

I like this : downloading (twice) a movie you already own...he he...What about backuping the original instead of spending hours downloading the movie :D :D :D

Guys, I plan to make backups of the 200 DVD I bought. Can you point me to a site where I could download them ? :p

QQ, chose whatever version you want since they look the same to you anyway. But honestly, this forum is not the place to discuss this and I totally agree with RetroActive.

Oh come on, no need to be sarcastic here. There might be dozen of reasons why one should download instead of ripping himself, eg 1) no experience in ripping whatsoever; 2) limited processing power of machine he owns (c300a alike); 3) limited free disk space; 4) ultra fast internet connection; ......anything else

Now so that you feel safer, imagine that I made those two rips myself. And question stays the same then.

Sorry, you cannot promote illegal copying in here, and that's a rule. Either you agree or not. I'm not judging anyone here, just mentioning that this kind of post, as Retroactive pointed it out, may have bad consequences on the global Doom9 forum.

And where did I promote that? Can you prove I dont have the actual DVD? I never said that. As for saying I have it - I didnt say that either, just as 99% of posters here dont mention that either.

Seriously, I'm not trying to flame anything or go against rules. I just believe you're applying them where one shouldnt see them fit.
