just didn't find a complete solution to this problem descirbed in one thread so i thought it would be a good idea to sum it up for some less experienced users in here.
here's how you can get "the most" out gknot combined with divX 5.03:
do everything exactly the same as you always did until you save your *.avs file. (this is "happening" when you click 'save & encode' in the preview window of gknot!) oh... do not forget to write down or remember the bitrate you calculated in gknot, this will not be transported along through the next step.
now if you do not want to mess around with besweet and it's GUI or don't know how to encode with it (it would be worth learning it though!!) if you want to produce a divx with ac3 sound you can skip this step! Just go to the audio tab, set the audio encoding parameters as usual and click on "add audio job to encoding queue (no video)" this will do all the audio encoding for you and leave you with a ready- to-mux mp3 file.
after you are done with the audio, saved the *.avs file and written down the bitrate you can close gknot since it does not have any more use for us.
now open virtualdub, nandub or virtualdub mode and load the *.avs file you've saved. go to the video tab, select full processing mode and then again in the video tab hit 'compression' to set up divx. a window pops up telling you to choose the codec. if properly installed you'll find divx 5.03 within this list. choose it and click configure.
now this a little more tricky than in gknot if you do not want to use the basic settings. first decide if you want to do the new nth pass feature or the good old 2 pass one. of course you can also use 1 pass, but i wouldn't recommend that unless you either lack time or use a slow computer (>700Mhz). i'll just describe multipass though:
select multipass: 1st pass from the drop down menu, enter the encoding bitrate just below and check the box next to "do not prompt for errors and warnings!" then you're set. just click ok until you come back to the main vdub window and go to file>save as avi. (do not forget to check the box in the save as dialog 'don't run the job now, add it to the job control...' then enter a name for your first pass avi. you can delete it afterwards since it will not be playable. then go back to the video tab, choose fast recompress and then go to compression again. choose divx 5.03 from the list and open the configure box. now do not change anything but the dropdown selection. there you have to select multipass: nth pass.
hit ok and save the avi again choosing another (!!) filename for the avi. if you want more passes you'll just have to save the avi again under another name. just keep in mind if you're a little short on disk space that evey avi, except the 1st pass one, will use up the full disk size... so a 5 pass 2 disk movie can use up to approx 4x 1.4 Gig...
oh and if you're using nandub or virtualdubmode, you can mux the audio with you're last pass... see below for instructions, which have to be applied before saving the last pass you want to do.
ok... after you're done encoding, load the avi into avimux (download it in the downloads section of doom9.org). also load the mp3 you've created before or the ac3 file. then just hit mux and you are all done. alternatively you can mux it with nandub or virtualdubmod, but i won't descirbe this here since you can check this in several guides @doom9.org here's a link (http://www.doom9.org/virtualdub_procedures.htm#mp3mux)
on how to split a 2 cd divx - check
hope this helps some of you!
