View Full Version : Sony DRU500 Firmware version G - 4x

I have confirmed that the new firmware for the DRU500 from Sony now allows writing at 4x with the new Verbatim DVD+R disks. These are the ones from Verbatim that are marked "1x-4x speed". The slightly older Verbatims that are not marked this way still burn at 2.4x.

It's nice to burn +R in 15 minutes or less!

Sure is nice. Any other comments since you upgraded to 1.0g ? anything particular you noticed ? Did you try burning anything else but DVDs ?
I'm curious because I have 1.0d and I'm afraid about upgrading and possibly ruining my brand new DRU500a. On the other side, I have problems with black CD-Rs (memorex and PNY), the sony will not see them (wether they are blank or already burnt).
Did you by chance use these black CD-Rs on your burner ?
I'd be glad to know.

Thanks

@ waldok
So you did not upgrade your firmware even after my comment

What are you expecting from 1.0g?

Nobody reported black cd read problems who has 1.0f ... :p

Mb1,

I knew you would react to this one. No, I finally didn't upgrade. But I promise I was soooo clooose to do it :p

No offense intended, but I'd like someone to tell me that Black CDs didn't work with 1.0d and now work great with 1.0g (or 1.0f or 1.0z or whatever version). Or I'm waiting until the official Sony firmware release says : "This version will specifically solve Waldok's problem with black CD-Rs and the moron could have trusted mb1 from the start" :D

Things work too well for the moment on the DVD side with 1.0d to risk to mess it up with a firmware upgrade anyway unless I'm sure it works great for SEVERAL users (call me a coward).

yelling : Who wants cheap black Cd-Rs, cheap black Cd-Rs ?

I do have Memorex Black CD-R's, but have not had the chance to try burning them with the Sony. I'll try it tonight, and get back to you.

Confirmed: There are no problems burning Memorex Black CD-R with a Sony DRU500 on firmware 1.0g. I overburned a BIN file (SVCD, 821,296 KB) this evening at 24x. Works fine.

If that could convince "our" waldok

Give him more input people :D

Aaahh, selling this damned black cdr charge or selling it not, that would be the question (very free adapted from Mr. William Sh.) ???

I can see the conspiracy here ! You guys want me to upgrade cause you are both paid by Sony for each upgraded burner. No way, I'll resist, I am a FREE man, you won't get me ! Well, in fact you will :D

I'll let you guys know if everything goes well afterwards. Be prepared for a terrible storm if I ruin my stuff ;)

And, well, ehm....thanks a lot pals :)

My kingdom, My kingdom for a new firmware !

Any else experiencing extremely slow CD burning times. I have had the problem since 1.0f and it's still in g. It takes forever to write the lead in and then the disc takes longer to read by other CD players. I'm using the regular Memorex CDs. DVDs burn fine though. Anyone?

See, maybe I'll take some more time before I upgrade, I think. At least until this slow burning CD case is solved, since 1.0d burns Cd fine (provided they are not black).

I knew it I knew it :D

You're a strange, strange person.

1.0f burns CDs fine, that's the firmware I'd upgrade to.

As I reported earlier, 1.0g also burns CD fine- 24x with overburn.

I have not found any side effects with 1.0g at this time.

I am only at 1.0f, but I have had no CDR burning problems.

Thank you guys for all your help here. I won't bother people any longer with this upgrade story which I made a bit "longer" than I should have. Hope I didn't get too much on your nerves ;)
Anyway be sure I really appreciate you sharing your experience.

I'll go for a 1.0g upgrade to see if it solves my problem.

Thanks again

Don't stop we all want to know how it went and if it solved your problems as you might already know:

ROTFL

This has been the most funny thread I've read in months...

BTW, I upgraded to the G firmware, but so far I've only burned one DVD+RW (test) to see if the device works at all  .

And, again, the cliqeu gets money for another G upgrader ;) .

Cheers,

Ookie.

ookami, pleased to see you had fun with this thread :D
Nedd I precise I still haven't upgraded yet and I'm still on 1.0d (no, no, mb1, not on the head, it hurts ! :p )

Especially considering recent problems Mark had with his burner refusing to burn DVD-RW all of a sudden.
Everything works fine for me for the moment (what ?? what black CD-Rs ? neve seen anyh of those in my entire life, I swear, your Honor !). So I'll stick with this 1.0d version until my DRU 500a refuses all DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW altogheter :D

(Int21h, don't you call me a strange person again :p )
(And all you conspirators, you wno't get my money :p )

Especially considering recent problems Mark had with his burner refusing to burn DVD-RW all of a sudden.Keep in mind this happened with 1.0f and I only tried an upgrade to 1.0g after to see if it would fix it.
Now after a couple of successful burns and another person complaining about the Memorex DVD-RW discs I am starting to become convinced it was a media issue. Although I can't figure out in my head how 5 discs went bad at the same time, but the TDK DVD-RW disc is still burning and erasing fine now.
(And all you conspirators, you wno't get my money ) We don't want your money we want something far more valuable.
